Geodatabase administrator in IBM Db2

The geodatabase administrator in IBM Db2 is an operating system account named sde.

The geodatabase administrator owns and manages the following:

  • Geodatabase system tables, triggers, indexes, constraints, sequences, packages, views, functions, and procedures
  • The default geodatabase version

Because the geodatabase administrator owns all the enterprise geodatabase system objects, the sde account must exist before you create a geodatabase in an existing, spatially enabled Db2 database. The database administrator must create the sde account and grant it the necessary permissions to access the database and the privileges required to create a geodatabase in it.

Esri recommends that the sde user's schema be used to store the sde geodatabase system objects only. Create separate users to create datasets, such as feature classes and tables. Following the practice of storing only system tables in the geodatabase administrator's storage space simplifies the management of the geodatabase and makes it easier for you to delete the geodatabase from the database if you ever decide to do so.
