Edit a topological vertex

In the Modify Features pane, Vertices Edit Vertices can edit vertices that are topologically connected when you enable map topology on the Edit tab. Moving, adding or deleting a shared vertex also modifies the vertices and edges shared by polyline or polygon features.

Editing a topology vertex enables you to make simple changes to coincident boundaries that need to remain topologically connected when you finish your edits. When multiple features are selected, you can refine the selection and choose the features to be modified.

For steps to move a topology node, see Move a topology node.

Move a vertex

You can move a shared vertex by dragging it, or right-click and use commands on the context menu to type a distance or a coordinate location.

  1. On the Edit tab, in the Manage Edits group, click the Map Topology Map Topology drop-down arrow and enable map topology.
  2. On the Edit tab in the Features group, click Modify Modify Features.

    The Modify Features appears.

  3. Expand Reshape and click Vertices Edit Vertices.

The tool opens in the pane.

    Edit Vertices Edges
  4. Click the Edges tab.

The topology graph highlights in the map.

  5. Click Select Select Topology and click the vertex you want to move.

The selection appears in a list in the pane and highlights in the map. The editing toolbar appears with vertex tools.

    • Move Delta XYZ—Moves a vertex by the X and Y distance you type in the dialog box.
    • Move To Absolute XYZ—Move a vertex to the coordinate location you type in the dialog box.
  8. On the editing toolbar, click Finish Finish or press the F2 key to apply your changes.
    Note:

If your edits break the topology graph, the message Edit operation failed Error appears, and your changes are canceled.

Add a vertex

You can add a vertex to a shared topology edge using the vertex tools that appear on the editing toolbar, or right-click and use the command on the context menu. New coincident segments are created for the features sharing the common edge.

  4. Click the Edges tab.

The topology graph highlights in the map.

  5. Click Select Select Topology and click the vertex you want to move.

The selection appears in a list in the pane and highlights in the map. The editing toolbar appears with vertex tools.
