Modify Features tool reference

On the Edit tab in the Features group, Modify Features Modify Features opens the task pane containing editing tools listed in the following table. They are organized by editing category.

Alignment

The alignment tools change the position or alignment of features.

NameDescription

Align Edges Align Edge

Closes gaps between adjacent polyline or polygon features using map topology. Vertices are added or deleted to create a coincident edge or edges with the adjacent feature.

Align Features Align Features

Closes gaps between adjacent polyline or polygon features using a traced line and a buffer tolerance. Vertices are added or deleted to create a coincident edge with the traced feature.

You can set this tool to allow aligning features without a selection

Annotation Edit Annotation

Modifies annotation features. You can edit the text string, and move, scale, or rotate the feature by dragging a selection handle when you select the feature using Select Annotation Select Annotation.

Move Move

Moves features or topology to a new location using one of two modes:

  • Features moves features.
  • Edges moves topology.

Move To Move To

Moves features to a new coordinate location or by an offset distance you specify with x,y and z values.

Rotate Rotate

Rotates features about an anchor point.

Scale Scale

Resizes features about an anchor point.

Transform Transform

Shifts, scales, and rotates a select feature based on the direction and distance of two or more from-to displacement links you create in the map.

Alignment tools

Reshape

The reshape tools modify or replace the geometry of a feature.

NameDescription

Continue Continue Feature

Resumes editing a polyline, polygon, or multipart feature.

Extend or Trim Extend or Trim

Extends or trims polyline features and terminates them where they touch another feature in the map selected as the boundary edge.

You can set this tool to allow extending or trimming without a selection

Replace Geometry

Replaces the entire geometry of a polyline or polygon feature with new geometry. The attribute values remain unchanged.

Replace Multipatch Replace Multipatch

Replaces a multipatch feature with a 3D model on your local or network file system at the same insertion coordinates.

Reshape Reshape

Replaces portions of features or topology with new geometry you draw across the feature using one of two modes:

  • Features edits portions of polyline or polygon features.
  • Edges edits portions of topology.

The attribute values remain unchanged.

You can set this tool to allow reshaping without a selection

Vertices Edit Vertices

Moves, adds, and deletes vertices, segments, nodes, or edges of features or topology using one of two modes:

  • Features edits vertices and segments of polyline and polygon features.
  • Edges edits nodes and edges of topology.

Reshape tools

Divide

The divide tools split features into one or more new features.

NameDescription

Clip Clip

Clips a polygon feature that touches or is within a buffered distance to a selected line or polygon feature.

ExplodeExplode

Separates the component parts of one or more multipart features into singlepart features. This enables you to work with the parts as independent features and edit their attributes individually.

Planarize Planarize

Splits the selected polyline features at all intersections and removes all remaining coincident line segments.

Split Split

Splits a polyline or polygon feature where a newly drawn line intersects it. The new feature contains the default attribute values defined by the data source of the selected feature.

You can set this tool to allow splitting without a selection

Split Line Split Line

Splits a polyline feature into one or more new features. The new features contain the default attribute values defined by the data source of the selected feature.

You can set this tool to allow splitting without a selection

Divide tools

Construct

The construct tools create new features from existing features.

NameDescription

Buffer Buffer

Creates polyline or polygon buffer features around selected features at a specified offset distance. The destination layer is specified by choosing a feature template. When you create buffers around two or more features, select Dissolve to merge the resulting buffers into one nonoverlapping buffer.

Duplicate Vertical Duplicate Vertical

Copies selected z-enabled 3D features vertically a specified number of times at a specified offset.

Merge Merge

Merges a polyline or polygon feature with an existing feature. You can remove the original features or keep them and create a new feature. The selected features must exist on the same layer.

Construct tools

Topology

The topology tools validate and fix geodatabase topology. To enable them, on the Edit tab, in the Manage Edits group, click the topology arrow and select Geodatabase Topology Geodatabase Topology.

Note:

On the Edit tab, when you select No Topology No Topology, geodatabase Topology tools in the Modify Features pane are disabled. However, they remain enabled and available in Error Inspector.

NameDescription

Validate All Validate Extent

Identifies topology errors in the active map. Feature geometry that violates the rule or rules are identified and symbolized in the Contents pane as errors on separate topology layers.

Validate Extent Validate Extent

Identifies topology errors in the active map extent. Feature geometry that violates the rule or rules are identified and symbolized in the Contents pane as errors on separate topology layers.

Fix Error Fix Error

When you click a topology error in a map, a context menu appears near the pointer listing predefined fixes you can apply to the feature.
