Modify the page
Once a layout has been created, you can modify the page at any time on the Layout tab in the Page Setup group. You can change page Orientation and page Size, create a custom page size, or select a page size from a printer.
Additional layout options can be set by clicking Properties. On the General tab, you can change the name of the layout. On the Page Setup tab, you can choose a new page size from a gallery, set a custom page size, choose a page size from a printer, change the page units, and change the page orientation.
The Layout Properties dialog box can also be accessed by double-clicking the layout in the Contents pane.
Rulers are available to help you create your page layout. You can toggle their visibility on the Layout tab in the Show group.
Ruler units will always match page units. To change page units, double-click the layout in the Contents pane. On the Page Setup tab, click the Units drop-down menu.
Guides are available to help you position and size elements on the page. You can toggle their visibility on the Layout tab in the Show group.
To add guides, right-click the ruler to access its context menu. In the context menu, you will see the options Add Guide and Add Guides. Choose Add Guide to create a single vertical or horizontal guide at the location you clicked the ruler. Choose Add Guides... to open a dialog box with options for placing guides at exact locations.
While rulers must be visible to add guides, rulers do not need to be visible to view existing guides.
The Add Guides dialog box allows you to choose the orientation and placement of your guides.
- Horizontal—Creates horizontal guide(s)
- Vertical—Creates vertical guide(s)
- Both—Creates both horizontal and vertical guide(s) at once
- Single location—Places a guide at the specified position
- Evenly spaced—Creates evenly spaced guides across the page starting at 0
- Center—Places a guide at the center of the page
- Offset from edge—Places guides at a given distance from the edges of the page
After choosing an orientation and placement option, you can input a respective position value if applicable.
To move a guide, hover over its position on the ruler until a slider control appears. Click and drag the slider to move the guide to the desired position.
To remove guides, right-click the ruler to bring up its context menu and choose Remove Guide to remove a single guide or Remove All Guides to remove them all.
Layout snapping is an application level setting. When enabled, when you move or resize any layout element, it will snap to a guide once it's near enough. Temporary guides will also appear as you move or resize an element to help you line elements up with each other and the page.
To toggle snapping on or off, click Snapping .
You can temporarily disable snapping by holding down the Spacebar.
To enable or disable snap modes, hover over Snapping and click them to toggle them on or off.
The following snap modes are available on the layout:
|Snap mode||Snapping behavior|
Elements will snap to the nearest guide.
Elements will snap to temporary guides that will appear when an element is aligned with the edge or center of other elements on the page.
The snap modes are not mutually exclusive. You can have them both enabled, both disabled, or one enabled at time.
