Portal items

From the Portal tab in the Catalog pane and the Portal item collections in the Catalog view's Contents pane, you can browse, search, and use content from the active portal in the same manner that you can browse, search, and use project items. When the active portal has access to curated, authoritative content from the Living Atlas of the World, you can also browse, search, and use these items.

The following collections of content are available:

  • My Content
  • Groups
  • All Portal
  • Living Atlas

My Content

After signing in, you can access the maps, data, and tools you've added to your organization through My Content. By default, all of your items are private, which means other people can't see them, even if they are a member of a group to which you belong. You can keep these items private so only you can access them. Alternatively, you can share your items with everybody, your organization, or groups to which you belong.

When you're browsing this collection and you search, only items from this collection are included in the results.

If you're not signed in, or have not saved any content to this collection, no items will be available.

Groups

After signing in, you can access the list of groups to which you belong, and all the items shared with those groups. If you're a member of a group, you can share your items with that group. Sharing with specific groups restricts access to a smaller, more focused set of people.

When you're browsing this collection and you search, only groups to which you have access are included in the results. If the Search My Organization option is checked, only groups associated with your organization are included in the results.

If you're not signed in, or do not belong to any groups, no groups will initially be available. If you have an Internet connection, you can still search for public groups available from the active portal.

All Portal

This collection provides access to all items available to you from the active portal. It does not provide an initial list of items from which to choose. If you're signed in, all of My Content, all content available to the groups of which you are a member, and all public content will be searched.

If you're not signed in, and you have an Internet connection, you can still search public items available from the active portal.

Your organization may restrict members from exploring public items available from the active portal that are not provided by your organization. If access is restricted, only public items provided by your organization will be searched. If your organization doesn't restrict access to content, or if your organization allows you to uncheck the Search My Organization option, public items on the active portal provided by other organizations will be included in the search results.

Note:

In general, only items that can be used in ArcGIS Pro will be available from the active portal. However, some items may appear with the generic online item icon Online Item, which indicates the portal item isn't recognized by ArcGIS Pro and can't be used at this time.

Living Atlas

This collection provides access to all items available from the Living Atlas of the World that you can use in ArcGIS Pro. This ready-to-use content is available when the active portal is an ArcGIS Online organization or accesses public ArcGIS Online content. It may also be available when you are signed in to Portal for ArcGIS, and the Living Atlas content has been configured.

After selecting Living Atlas, you see a preliminary list of the items in this collection. You can filter these items by category, for example, to find demographic or transportation information. Search the entire Living Atlas collection or a specific category to find items of interest.
