An overview of the Use Proximity toolset

These tools analyze distance and proximity.

The Use Proximity tools allow you to perform analysis that accounts for either straight-line (Euclidean) or weighted distance. Distance can be weighted by a simple cost (friction) surface, or in ways that account for vertical and horizontal restrictions to movement.

Distance analysis can also be performed with the ArcGIS Spatial Analyst extension.

Note:

The raster analysis portal tools are available when you are signed in to an ArcGIS Enterprise portal that has ArcGIS Image Server configured for Raster Analysis. When a tool is run, ArcGIS Pro serves as a client and the processing occurs in the servers federated with ArcGIS Enterprise. The portal tools accept layers from your portal as input and creates output in your portal.

The tools will not work if your active portal is ArcGIS Online.

These tools can be accessed from either the Analysis ribbon or the Geoprocessing pane's Portal tab.

Distance Accumulation

Calculates accumulated distance for each cell to sources, allowing for straight-line distance, cost distance, and true surface distance, as well as vertical and horizontal cost factors.

Distance Allocation

Calculates distance allocation for each cell to the provided sources based on straight-line distance, cost distance, and true surface distance, as well as vertical and horizontal cost factors.

Optimal Path As Line

Calculates the optimal path from a source to a destination as a line.

Optimal Path As Raster

Calculates the optimal path from a source to a destination as a raster.

Optimal Region Connections

Calculates the optimal connection of paths between two or more input regions.

Tools of the Use Proximity toolset

In ArcGIS Pro 2.6 and later, the recommended tools for distance analysis are those listed in the table above. In versions earlier than ArcGIS Pro 2.6, distance analysis was performed using other tools; these tools are still available in the Use Proximity (Legacy) toolset.
