Include web feature layers in an Indoors web map

Available for an ArcGIS organization licensed with the Indoors extension.

Work orders, assets, and other points of interest that happen to reside outside of the ArcGIS Indoors Information Model can be included in your Indoors web map by sharing the data as a web feature layer and adding it to your map in ArcGIS Pro before sharing to your ArcGIS Enterprise portal.

Note:
  • It's recommended that you share additional web layers intended for use in an Indoors web map to the same ArcGIS Indoors licensed Enterprise portal with which you will share your Indoors web map.
  • Including web feature layers in your Indoors map is limited to point data type layers.
  • The Indoors mobile apps don't currently support including web feature layers except for use with work orders when a properly configured category is available.

Required fields

Indoors requires fields that exist in any web feature layer to be recognized as Indoors compliant.

Requires one or both of the following fields:

  • FACILITY_ID
  • FACILITY_NAME

And requires one or more of the following fields:

  • LEVEL_ID
  • LEVEL_NAME
  • LEVEL_NUMBER
  • VERTICAL_ORDER

Including these fields and ensuring that they are correctly populated in the data allows Indoors to filter them correctly for the selected facility and level when using the floor picker.

Note:

Indoors allows for a limited set of fields to exist in the web layer and automatically determines the correct association of each feature to the Indoors floor plan assuming one or more of the listed facility- and level-related fields exist.

It's expected that the values of these fields match their associated features in the Indoors database. For example, features from a web feature layer that reside within an Indoors facility and include the FACILITY_ID field are expected to have the correct facility ID for the Indoors feature they intersect with. Refer to your organization’s Indoors database for guidance on how to populate these fields for features in your web feature layer.

Note:

When configuring categories to use a web feature layer, you may optionally provide a mapping in the category definition to map fields from the layer’s schema to the required fields. This option is only available when configuring categories based on a web feature layer. Stand-alone web layers must include the required combination of fields to be recognized as an Indoors compliant layer.

Indoors automatically treats compliant web feature layers as an Indoors layer for display and identification of features.

Additional fields may be required if the web feature layer will be referenced by configured categories. Web layers that are intended to support the work order capabilities of the Indoors apps require additional field mappings.

Layer properties

Display field

The display field of a web feature layer is particularly important for Indoors. This field defines the title of the info panel in the apps, as well as the labels on the feature in search hints, directions, my places, related items, and home.

You should verify the display field for your web layer in your Enterprise portal by looking at the item page for your new web feature layer, clicking the link for the REST Services Directory, then looking for the display field value.

If the layer’s display field is not appropriate, you can either modify the layer’s display field in the layer properties before sharing your Indoors web map or update the schema of the shared layer to include an appropriate display field and share an updated version for use in Indoors. In either case, you should ensure that all data within the layer includes appropriate values for the display field to ensure the best experience for Indoors app users.

Note:

When a new item is added to an Enterprise portal as a web feature layer, ArcGIS Enterprise will automatically assign the first field it finds with the word “name” in it to the display field if it was not otherwise defined in the layer properties before sharing the web layer.

Symbology

It may be necessary to adjust the layer’s symbology for the intended use in Indoors or to align with symbology themes and or branding requirements within your organization. This can be accomplished by modifying the layer’s symbology settings in ArcGIS Pro before sharing the Indoors web map, without updating the source feature layer.

Indoors includes styles with symbology that matches the Indoors map templates, both available in the Product Data install.

Note:

It’s recommended that the images used to represent categories in Indoors match the symbology used to represent the features displayed on the map. Keep this consideration in mind and include appropriate images if configuring categories against your web feature layers.
