Constrain a segment vertical

When you

The Vertical geometry constraint Vertical constrains the pointer along the z-axis when you sketch z-enabled line geometry. It is available on the context menu when create z-enabled 3D polyline features in a 3D scene and right-click the map.

For steps to specify z-values using the elevation tools on the Edit tab using tools in the Elevation group, see Specify an elevation for 3D features.

Vertical

To constrain a new z-enabled segment vertical, create at least one vertex, right-click the map, and click Vertical Vertical. To remove the constraint, press the Esc key.

Note:

If you have created at least one vertex with a z-enabled polyline in a scene, skip to step 9.

  1. Open a scene containing your z-enabled polyline features.
  2. On the Edit tab, in the Features group, click Create Create Features.

    The Create Features pane appears.

  3. In the pane, click a polyline feature template with a z-enabled data source.

The template expands to show the tool palette and the construction toolbar appears in the current map.

  4. Next to the tool palette, click the forward arrow Forward.

The active template appears in the pane with its tool palette and feature attribute table.

  5. In the attribute table, type the values you want to apply to the new feature.
  6. On the Edit tab, in the Snapping group, enable your snapping preferences, and move the pointer back to the map.
  7. Click Line Line.
  8. Create the first vertex using one of the following methods:
    • Click the map.
    • Right-click and click Absolute X,Y,Z Absolute XYZ, type the values on the dialog box, and press Enter.
  9. Right-click the map, and click Vertical Vertical.
    • To remove the constraint, press the Esc key.

The direction of the new segment locks vertical along the z-axis of the scene.

  10. Drag the pointer vertically across the map and click the map to create the second vertex.
  11. To finish the feature, right-click and click Finish Finish or press the F2 key.
