Constrain a deflection angle

Constraining a new segment to a deflection angle locks the segment to a specified angle measured from the previous segment or from a segment on an existing feature. The commands are available on the context menu when you create a line or a polygon feature.

Positive values are measured in a counterclockwise direction. Negative values are measured in a clockwise direction.

Deflection

A deflection angle is measured from the last segment in your active sketch.

  1. On the Edit tab, set your snapping preferences and show the Create Features pane.
    1. In the Snapping group, enable your snapping preferences.
      Tip:

To temporarily turn snapping off as you draw a feature, press and hold the spacebar.

    2. In the Features group, click Create Create Features.
  2. In the pane, choose a line or a polygon feature template and click Line Line or Polygon Polygon.

The construction toolbar appears at the bottom of the map.

  3. Create at least one segment.
  4. Right-click and click Deflection Deflection, or press F.
  5. On the Deflection dialog box, specify the Horizontal deflection angle and unit format.
    • If the feature is z-aware, specify the angular Pitch for the z direction.

  6. Press Enter to constrain the segment to the specified angle.
    • To cancel the constraint and specify a new angle, press Esc.
  7. Specify the distance of the segment and create the vertex using one of the following methods.
    • Move the pointer and click the map.
    • Right-click and click Distance Distance.
  8. On the construction toolbar, click Finish Finish, or press F2.

Segment deflection

A segment deflection angle is measured from a segment of an existing feature you right-click to show the context menu.

  1. On the Edit tab, set your snapping preferences and show the Create Features pane.
    1. In the Snapping group, enable your snapping preferences.
