Constrain a segment perpendicular

On the context menu for editing, Perpendicular Perpendicular locks the direction of a new line segment perpendicular to another segment of an existing feature. It is available when you create a new polyline or polygon feature or edit a finished feature with Continue Feature Continue Feature.

Perpendicular

To constrain a segment perpendicular, create at least one vertex, right-click the existing segment, and click Perpendicular Perpendicular, or hover over the existing segment and press the E key. To remove the constraint, press the Esc key.

Note:

If you have created at least one vertex, skip to step 5.

  1. On the Edit tab, in the Features group, click Create Create Features.

The Create Features pane appears and displays a list of feature templates.

  2. Click a polyline or polygon feature template.

The template expands and displays feature construction tools.

  3. Click Line Line or Polygon Polygon.
  4. Create the first vertex using one of the following methods:
    • Click the map.
    • Right-click and click Absolute X,Y,Z Absolute XYZ, type the values on the dialog box, and press Enter.
  5. Constrain the new segment perpendicular using one of the following methods:
    • Right-click the existing segment and click Perpendicular Perpendicular.
    • Hover over the existing segment and press the E key.

The direction of the new segment locks parallel to the existing segment. To remove the constraint, press the Esc key.

  6. Create the second vertex and complete the segment using one of the following methods:
    • Click the map.
    • Right-click and click Distance Distance, type the distance, and press Enter.
