Extend or trim a polyline feature

In the Modify Features pane, the Extend or Trim tool extends a selected line feature to an existing feature boundary or trims it where they intersect. The tool pane contains one multitool that extends or trims a line, and two preset tools that exclusively extend and trim.

Extend or trim a selected line

Select the line feature to be modified and click the feature to which the line feature is to be extended or trimmed. When you hover over the selected feature, a preview displays your changes before clicking.

1. On the Edit tab in the Features group, click Modify .

   The Modify Features pane appears.

2. Expand Reshape and click Extend or Trim .

   The tools open in the pane.

3. Select the line feature you want to extend or trim using the tools in the pane.
   1. Click the Select tool and select the line feature.
   2. To filter the selection to only one feature, double-click the feature item you want to edit or right-click it and click Only Select This .

      

4. Choose one of the following tools:
   • Extend or Trim —Extends or trims a line feature depending on the position of the pointer.
   • Extend —Extends a line feature.
   • Trim —Trims a line feature.

   

5. To extend a line, do the following:
   1. Hover over the boundary feature to which the selected line is to be extended.

      A preview of the extended line appears.

   2. Click the boundary feature to extend the line.
6. To trim a line, do the following:
   1. Hover over the boundary feature that intersects the selected line to be trimmed.

      A preview of the section to be trimmed appears as a dashed line.

   2. Click the boundary feature to trim the line.

Extend or trim without a selection

When the tool is set to modify features without a selection, hover over and click the line feature to be modified. Click the end to be extended or click the intersection at which it is to be trimmed.

1. On the Edit tab in the Features group, click Modify .

   The Modify Features pane appears.

2. Expand Reshape and click Extend or Trim .

   The tools open in the pane.

3. Check Allow Extend or Trim without a selection.
4. Choose one of the following tools:
   • Extend or Trim —Extends or trims a line feature depending on the position of the pointer.
   • Extend —Extends a line feature.
   • Trim —Trims a line feature.
5. To extend a line, do the following:
   1. Hover over the end of the line to be extended.

      A preview of the extended line appears to touch the nearest boundary.

   2. Click the end of the line again to extend it.
6. To trim a line, do the following:
   1. Hover over the line to be trimmed on either side of the intersecting boundary feature.

      A preview of the section to be trimmed appears as a dashed line.

   2. Click the dashed section to trim it from the line.
