Modify feature segments

In the Modify Features pane, Vertices edits polyline and polygon feature segments. You can move segments, change their geometry, change the radius of an arc segment, and reshape curves by clicking and dragging them.

This topic shows you how to modify segments as stand-alone features. For steps to modify segments as topologically connected edges and preserve contiguity between features, see Edit topological edges.

Move a segment

To move a segment, click Vertices , click the Features tab, and select the feature. Hover over the segment until the pointer changes to the move symbol, and click and drag the segment. The relative position between the two endpoints of the segment is preserved.

1. On the Edit tab in the Features group, click Modify.

   The Modify Features pane appears.

2. Expand Reshape and click Vertices .

   The tool opens in the pane.

3. In the pane, click the Features tab if Map Topology is enabled.

   Feature editing mode is enabled.

4. Click Active Select , and select the feature you want to reshape.

   The selection appears as a list in the pane, and the vertices toolbar appears at the bottom of the map.

   

5. If you select more than one feature, click an item in the list to flash it in the map, right-click the feature you want to edit, and click Only Select This on the context menu.
6. On the Edit tab in the Snapping group, enable your snapping preferences.
   • Press and hold the Spacebar to temporarily turn snapping off.
7. Hover over the segment until the pointer changes to the move symbol, and click and drag the segment.
8. To finish the feature, right-click and click Finish , or press the F2 key.

Change segment geometry

To change the geometry of a segment, click Vertices , click the Features tab, and select the feature. Right-click the segment, click Change Segment and choose the new segment geometry.

1. On the Edit tab in the Features group, click Modify.

   The Modify Features pane appears.

2. Expand Reshape and click Vertices .

   The tool opens in the pane.

3. In the pane, click the Features tab if Map Topology is enabled.

   Feature editing mode is enabled.

4. Click Active Select , and select the feature you want to reshape.

   The selection appears as a list in the pane, and the vertices toolbar appears at the bottom of the map.

   

5. If you select more than one feature, click an item in the list to flash it in the map, right-click the feature you want to edit, and click Only Select This on the context menu.
6. On the Edit tab in the Snapping group, enable your snapping preferences.
   • Press and hold the Spacebar to temporarily turn snapping off.
7. Hover over the segment until the pointer changes to the move symbol, and right-click the segment.

   The context menu appears.

   

8. Click Change Segment, and click one of the following on the context menu:
   • To Line—Changes an arc or a Bézier curve to a line segment.
   • To Circular Arc—Changes a line segment or Bézier curve to an arc.
   • To Bezier Curve—Changes a line segment or an arc to a Bézier curve.
9. To finish the feature, right-click and click Finish , or press the F2 key.

Change the radius of an arc segment

To change the radius of an arc segment, click Vertices , click the Features tab, and select the feature. Click and drag the arc segment, or press the R key and type the radius.

1. On the Edit tab in the Features group, click Modify.

   The Modify Features pane appears.

2. Expand Reshape and click Vertices .

   The tool opens in the pane.

3. In the pane, click the Features tab if Map Topology is enabled.

   Feature editing mode is enabled.

4. In the pane, click Active Select , and select the feature you want to reshape.

   The selection appears as a list in the pane, and the vertices toolbar appears at the bottom of the map.

   

5. If you select more than one feature, click an item in the list to flash it in the map, right-click the feature you want to edit, and click Only Select This on the context menu.
6. On the Edit tab in the Snapping group, enable your snapping preferences.

7. Hover over the segment until the pointer changes to the move symbol.
8. To change the radius, do one of the following:
   • Click and drag the segment using the pointer.
   • Press the R key, type the radius, and press Enter.
9. To finish the feature, right-click and click Finish , or press the F2 key.

Reshape a Bézier curve

To reshape a Bézier curve segment, click Vertices , click the Features tab, and select the feature. Click and drag the end points of a control handle, or click and drag the segment.

1. On the Edit tab in the Features group, click Modify.

   The Modify Features pane appears.

2. Expand Reshape and click Vertices .

   The tool opens in the pane.

3. In the pane, click the Features tab if Map Topology is enabled.

   Feature editing mode is enabled.

4. In the pane, click Active Select , and select the feature you want to reshape.

   The selection appears as a list in the pane, and the vertices toolbar appears at the bottom of the map.

   

5. If you select more than one feature, click an item in the list to flash it in the map, right-click the feature you want to edit, and click Only Select This on the context menu.
6. On the Edit tab in the Snapping group, enable your snapping preferences.

7. To reshape the curve, do one of the following:
   • Click and drag the end point of a control handle.
   • Press and hold the Ctrl key and click and drag a control handle overlapping a vertex.
   • Hover over the segment until the pointer changes to the move symbol, and click and drag the segment.
8. To finish the feature, right-click and click Finish , or press the F2 key.
