Inference constraints

Turning on Inference constraints Inference analyzes the segment of the active sketch over which the pointer is hovering and displays inferred geometric constraints. When snapping is turned, on the pointer can snap to them using the active snap agents.

This setting is available on the status bar at the bottom of the active map.

Inferred constraints

To turn on and use inference constraints, complete the following steps:

  1. On the Edit tab, in the Snapping group, click the drop-down arrow, and enable the following snap agents.
    1. Enable Edge Edge to snap to inferred line extensions displayed as solid constraint lines.
    2. Enable Point Point to snap to inferred perpendicular intersections displayed as small constraint squares.
    3. Enable Vertex Vertex to snap to inferred radial intersections displayed as intersecting constraint lines.
    4. Move the pointer back to the map.
  2. On the status bar at the bottom of the active map or scene, click Inference Inference to toggle inference constraints on or off. Hover over the icon to confirm the current setting.


  3. Click a line or polygon feature template and click the map to create the first vertex.

  4. Hover over one of the inferred constraint lines and click it to create the first segment.

    A circular constraint line with a radius equal to the length of the active segment appears.

  5. Hover over one of the inferred radial constraint intersections and click it to create the second segment.

  6. Continue sketching geometry using your active snap agents to snap to the inferred geometric constraints as they redisplay for each new segment.
    • To infer geometric constraints for an existing segment, hover over the segment until the constraints redisplay.
  7. To finish the feature, click Finish Finish, or press the F2 key.
