Productivity options for editing

On the project Options dialog box, on the Editing tab, expand the General section to change productivity optional settings for dynamic constraints, the editing toolbar, touch screen input, double-click shortcut, and the subtype warning dialog box.

Sketch symbology

Show feature symbology when you want layer symbology to draw as you create a feature. Clear this setting to pause the drawing of symbology until you click Finish Finish.

  1. On the Edit tab, in the Manage Edits group, click the Options dialog box launcher Launcher.
  2. On the Options dialog box, click Editing, and expand General.
  3. Check or clear Show feature symbology in the sketch.
  4. Click OK.

Double-click to finish

Turn the double-click shortcut on if you want this pointer action to run the Finish command Finish when you create or modify features using interactive editing tools. Clear this setting to turn off this shortcut.

  1. On the Edit tab, in the Manage Edits group, click the Options dialog box launcher Launcher.
  2. On the Options dialog box, click Editing, and expand General.
  3. Check or clear Enable double-click as a shortcut for the Finish button.
  4. Click OK.

Touch screen input

Turn touch screen input on if you have a touch-enabled device and want to create new features by touching the screen in addition to using the mouse and keyboard.

  1. On the Edit tab, in the Manage Edits group, click the Options dialog box launcher Launcher.
  2. On the Options dialog box, click Editing, and expand General.
  3. Check or clear Touch screen input for new features.
  4. Click OK.

Show dynamic constraints

Enable dynamic constraints to show and specify direction and distance values on-screen for new line segments as you drag the pointer. You can set which parameter receives the initial focus and set directional input as a deflection or an absolute angle.

  1. On the Edit tab, in the Manage Edits group, click the Options dialog box launcher Launcher.
  2. On the Options dialog box, click Editing, and expand General.
  3. Check Show dynamic constraints in the map.
  4. To set the default direction constraint, click one of the following:
    • Deflection—Measures the specified angle from the last line segment.
    • Absolute—Locks the specified angle to the coordinate system assigned to the map.
  5. To set the initial constraint focus when you press the Tab key, click one of the following:
    • Direction
    • Distance
  6. Click OK.

Show the editing toolbar

Turn the editing toolbar on if you want it to appear when you create features or modify them with interactive editing tools. Clear this setting to hide the toolbar and use only ribbon commands, context menus, and keyboard shortcuts.

  1. On the Edit tab, in the Manage Edits group, click the Options dialog box launcher Launcher.
  2. On the Options dialog box, click Editing, and expand General.
  3. Check or clear Show the editing toolbar on the map.
  4. Click OK.

Customize the editing toolbar

Customize the editing toolbar if you want to change the size of the toolbar or specify where it appears in an active map.

To change these settings interactively using the pointer, see Customize the editing toolbar.

  1. On the Edit tab, in the Manage Edits group, click the Options dialog box launcher Launcher.
  2. On the Options dialog box, click Editing, and expand General.
  3. Check Show the editing toolbar.
  4. Specify where the toolbar appears in the active map.
    • Left—Appears vertically on the left
    • Bottom—Appears horizontally at the bottom
    • Right—Appears vertically on the right
  5. Specify the size of the toolbar.
    • Small—Displays the icons at 24 by 24 pixels
    • Medium—Displays the icons at 32 by 32 pixels
    • Large—Displays the icons at 48 by 48 pixels
  6. Check or clear Magnify Toolbar.

    Check this setting to magnify the tool icons as you hover over them.

  7. Click OK.
