00175: <value> exceeds operating system limit

The size of the path used to share this GIS resource exceeds the operating system limit.

This path includes the path to the temporary cache location, staging folder, the name of the server connection, and the name of the GIS resource within the service definition file (.sd) being shared. For example, if you are sharing a web feature layer, this path would include the name of the map service definition file (.msd) contained in the service definition.

The <value> parameter refers to the GIS resource and whether the path in question is the temporary cache location, staging path, or the input directory path on the server.

Solutions

If your path exceeds the limit, you can do the following to reduce the number of characters used for this path:

  • If you are caching locally, shorten the Temp cache location path.
  • Change the location of the staging folder to a location closer to the root directory, C:\temp, for example.
  • Shorten the name of the GIS resource used for sharing.

For example, if you are sharing a web feature layer, you can shorten the name of the map file (.mapx) which, in turn, shortens the name of the .msd file within the service definition that is actually used in the sharing process.

  • Shorten the service name.

More information

The Windows file system has limits to the number of characters that a path can contain. ArcGIS Pro issues a warning when the combination of the path to the staging folder and the server connection exceeds the size supported by the operating system.
