Get started with ArcGIS Indoors

Available for an ArcGIS organization licensed with the Indoors extension.

ArcGIS Indoors allows you to create and manage data and share maps and services in support of the following apps: Indoor Space Planner, Indoor Viewer, ArcGIS Indoors for iOS, and ArcGIS Indoors for Android.

Space Planner is a browser-based app that allows you to plan occupant activity in an indoor space. For example, Space Planner allows you to plan the work locations for employees on a corporate campus. Space Planner also allows you to assign people to individual spaces or to activity-based work areas, called hotels or hot desks.

The Indoor Viewer, Indoors for iOS, and Indoors for Android apps allow you to find a location or resource in a facility or a site that includes several facilities. You can view detailed information about features, route between features, book meeting rooms or office hotels, call or email occupants, and launch apps such as ArcGIS Survey123 to log issues or configure work orders.

Indoors allows you to curate the data, author floor-aware maps, and share them to ArcGIS Enterprise or ArcGIS Online, where Indoor Viewer, Space Planner, Indoors for iOS, and Indoors for Android can access them.

The ArcGIS Indoors product data installation package is available from My Esri. This includes support files for use in creating floor-aware maps, such as map templates, attribute rules, and symbology, and downloading it is recommended.

Required software

One of the following is required if you are using Indoor Viewer, Indoor Space Planner,Indoors for iOS, or Indoors for Android:

  • The latest version of ArcGIS Enterprise for a portal connection
  • An ArcGIS Online organization

License Indoors

An Indoors license is required to use Indoors tools and create floor-aware maps in ArcGIS Pro. Administrators can configure Indoors licensing in one of the following ways:

  • Using the ArcGIS Indoors extension for ArcGIS Pro.
  • Using the ArcGIS Indoors organization extension in your ArcGIS organization on Enterprise or ArcGIS Online. This configuration method is required if you are using Indoor Viewer, Indoor Space Planner, Indoors for iOS, or Indoors for Android.

Both configuration methods require users to have an Advanced license level to access the full suite of Indoors geoprocessing tools in ArcGIS Pro.

Some Indoors functionality is available in ArcGIS Pro to users of any license level, provided they have an Indoors license configured, including some Indoors geoprocessing tools, the Indoors tools for configuring launch actions and categories, and the ability to configure floor-aware maps and use the floor filter.

Administrators and members with privileges to manage licenses can manage user types, roles, and access to licensed apps for members of their ArcGIS organization on Enterprise or ArcGIS Online.

Complete the following steps to configure ArcGIS Indoors in the ArcGIS organization for which you are an administrator:

  1. License Indoors in Enterprise or ArcGIS Online and manage user types for members of your ArcGIS organization.
  2. Ensure that the Indoors license is listed.
    1. Click the Organization tab and click Licenses.
    2. Click Add-on licenses if you configured the ArcGIS Indoors extension for ArcGIS Pro or Organization extensions if you configured ArcGIS Indoors as an organization extension.
    3. Verify that ArcGIS Indoors is listed.

If you configured both the ArcGIS Indoors extension for ArcGIS Pro and the ArcGIS Indoors organizational capability, Indoors is listed under both Add-on licenses and Organization extensions.

  3. Ensure that the following extensions are licensed and accessible to users who need to run the full suite of Indoors geoprocessing tools:

    • 3D Analyst
    • Network Analyst

Members of your ArcGIS organization who have been granted the necessary licenses can now connect to your ArcGIS organization in ArcGIS Pro.

Note:

By default, ArcGIS Pro is licensed with a Named User license that is managed through an ArcGIS Enterprise or ArcGIS Online organization. If you purchased the ArcGIS Desktop suite and an ArcGIS Indoors extension for ArcGIS Pro, you can convert Named User licenses to Single Use or Concurrent Use licenses. This option is not available for the Indoors organization extension.

Set up Indoors

Once an administrator has licensed ArcGIS Indoors and assigned you a Named User license for ArcGIS Pro and the Indoors extension in your ArcGIS organization, you can use the Indoors tools in ArcGIS Pro to prepare and share floor-aware maps. Sign in to ArcGIS Pro using your ArcGIS organization credentials to access Indoors tools.

Create floor plan data

Establishing an indoor GIS begins with creating the floor plan. This process can be mostly automated using geoprocessing tools available with ArcGIS Indoors. At a high-level, this process includes the following:

  1. Create the Indoors geodatabase or indoor dataset.
  2. Georeference source data.
  3. Import or digitize floor plan features.

A floor plan consists of feature data that defines the boundaries of your site (campus), facilities (buildings and other structures), levels (floors), units (occupiable spaces), and details (walls, doors, and other features) and is the basis for visualization in floor-aware maps. You can further enhance your floor plan later by adding floor-aware layers that include features such as occupants, events, work orders, or assets.

Create a routable network

Optionally, you can enhance your indoor GIS with a routable network to support navigation. At a high level, this process includes the following:

  1. Create the indoor network dataset.
  2. Generate pathways.
  3. Generate floor transitions.
  4. Thin the indoor pathways.
  5. Create landmark points.
  6. Rank pathways.
  7. Connect buildings and make any final network feature updates.
  8. Create the final network dataset.
  9. Optionally, add route barriers.

Map authoring

The map authoring process is different based on which app will be used to deploy ArcGIS Indoors.

Indoor Viewer

You must prepare a floor-aware map and, optionally, a scene to use in Indoor Viewer.

Indoors for iOS or Indoors for Android

You must create a mobile map package to use with ArcGIS Indoors for Android or ArcGIS Indoors for iOS. Optionally, configure device tracking for a mobile device.

You can also configure your database for issue reporting with ArcGIS Survey123.

Indoor Space Planner

You must prepare a map to use in Space Planner.

Share to your Enterprise portal

Once your floor-aware map, and optional scene, is ready, you must share it as a web map to your Enterprise portal so that Indoor Viewer and Space Planner can access it. Additional configuration in the apps is required.

Share to ArcGIS Online

Once you have prepared your floor-aware map and optional scene, you can share it as a web map to ArcGIS Online so that Indoor Viewer and Space Planner can access it. Additional configuration in the apps is required.
