Add entities and relationships to an existing link chart

You can add entities and relationships to an existing link chart from any of the places in which you work with a knowledge graph's content: maps, investigations, and other link charts. Each link chart can include content from only one knowledge graph. Entities and relationships can be added from more than one map, link chart, or investigation if their content is derived from the same knowledge graph.

The selected entities and relationships are added to an existing link chart. When a relationship is added, its origin and destination entities are also added to the link chart. If Group Mode is turned on for the link chart, a post-process is executed to search for and group any new relationship sets that may exist in the link chart with the added content.

Whichever method you use to add content to a link chart, the layout currently in use for visualizing the link chart's content is automatically reapplied to the entire link chart.

Add content from an investigation

When you are working with an investigation, you can add entities and relationships to an existing link chart by completing the following steps:

  1. In the investigation's Contents pane, do one of the following to list the knowledge graph entities and relationships you are interested in:
    • Click the Knowledge Graph Knowledge Graph in the Contents pane. All the entities and relationships appear in the contents list in the investigation.
    • Click Entity Types Entity Type. All entities in the knowledge graph appear in the list in the investigation.
    • Click Relationship Types Relationship Type. All relationships in the knowledge graph appear in the list in the investigation.
    • Double-click Entity Types Entity Type or Relationship Types Relationship Type, and click an entity type Entity Type or a relationship type Relationship Type. All knowledge graph items of the selected type appear in the list in the investigation.
  2. Press Ctrl and click individual items in the investigation's contents to select the entities or relationships you want to add.
  3. On the Investigation tab on the ribbon, in the Link Chart group, click the Add To menu Add To and click the link chart to which you want the selected graph items to be added.

The Add To menu only includes open link charts associated with the same knowledge graph as the investigation.

The entities and relationships selected in the source link chart are added to the link chart selected in the Add To menu.

Tip:

When you are viewing details for entities or relationships in the investigation view's details panel, you can add them to a link chart to explore and analyze their related content. Right-click the display expression at the top of the details panel and choose to add them to a new link chart.

You can also drag graph items from the investigation view's contents list to a link chart.

Add content from a knowledge graph layer in a map or scene

When you are working with a map or scene that includes a knowledge graph layer, you can add entities and relationships from that layer to an existing link chart by completing the following steps:

  1. Select the entities or relationships of interest in a knowledge graph layer on a map using any of the following methods.
    • On the Map tab on the ribbon, in the Selection group, use one of the selection tools such as Select By Rectangle Select By Rectangle to select entities associated with spatial features in a knowledge graph layer.
    • On the Map tab on the ribbon, in the Selection group, click Select By Attributes Select By Attributes. In the Select By Attributes window that appears, select entities in a knowledge graph layer or relationships in a knowledge graph table using values in their attribute tables.
    • On the Map tab on the ribbon, in the Selection group, click Select By Location Select By Location. In the Select By Location window that appears, select entities in a knowledge graph layer that have associated spatial features based on their spatial relationship to other features on the map.
    • In the map's Contents pane, right-click a knowledge graph layer or knowledge graph table and click Open Table Open Table. In the table that appears, select rows interactively such as by pressing Ctrl while clicking individual rows describing entities or relationships of interest.
  2. Click the knowledge graph layer in the Contents pane for the map or scene.

If there are many knowledge graph layers associated with the same knowledge graph, you can select all of those layers and add them to the same link chart in one step.

  3. Access the Knowledge Graph tab from the Knowledge Graph Layer tab on the ribbon. In the Selection group, click the Add To menu Add To and click the name of the link chart to which you want the selected graph items to be added.

The Add To menu only includes open link charts associated with the same knowledge graph as the knowledge graph layer in the active map or scene. However, if you select knowledge graph layers associated with different knowledge graphs, open link charts associated with all of those knowledge graphs will appear in the list.

The entities and relationships selected in the source knowledge graph layer are added to the link chart selected in the Add To menu.

If you selected many knowledge graph layers associated with different knowledge graphs, only entities associated with the same knowledge graph as the link chart will be added to the link chart selected in the Add To menu.

Add entities and relationships from one link chart to another

When you are working with a link chart, you can add some or all of its entities and relationships to another existing link chart by completing the following steps:

  1. Make the link chart that is the source of entities and relationships the active link chart.
  2. Select the entities or relationships you want to add to the other link chart by using one of the following methods:
    • On the Link Chart tab, in the Selection group, use one of the selection tools such as Select By Rectangle Select to select entities or relationships.
    • On the Link Chart tab, in the Selection group, click Select By Attributes Select By Attributes. In the Select By Attributes window that appears, select entities or relationships in a link chart layer or a link chart aggregation layer using values in their attribute tables.
    • In the Contents pane, right-click a link chart layer or a link chart aggregation layer and click Open Table Open Table. In the table that appears, select rows interactively such as by pressing Ctrl while clicking individual rows describing entities or relationships of interest.
  3. On the Link Chart tab on the ribbon, in the Selection group, click the Add To menu Add To and click the link chart to which you want the selected content to be added.

The Add To menu only includes open link charts associated with the same knowledge graph as the active link chart.

The entities and relationships selected in the source link chart are added to the link chart selected in the Add To menu.

Note:

When adding entities and relationships from another link chart, any entity group selected in the input link chart is ungrouped in the output link chart. Similarly, any relationship group selected in the input link chart is also ungrouped in the output link chart.
