Manage composite rules

Available with Data Reviewer license.

When you create a composite rule, you are grouping together two or more Reviewer checks into a single rule to evaluate features or rows in your database. Features or rows that satisfy all check conditions are returned as an error.

Create a composite rule

To create a rule using the Composite check, do the following.

  1. In the Catalog pane, expand the geodatabase connection that contains features that require automated validation.
    Note:

    Adding attribute rules to a dataset impacts backward compatibility:

    Once attribute rules are added to a dataset, the dataset is incompatible with ArcMap or ArcGIS Pro 2.0 and earlier. See client and geodatabase compatibility for more information about the available functionality when using mixed client and geodatabase releases.

    Newer Data Reviewer checks impact which ArcGIS client releases can access the dataset with the attribute rule.

  2. Verify that the data source is supported for the check type and that there is an exclusive lock on the underlying dataset.
  3. Verify that the source data contains a GlobalID column and has editor tracking enabled.
    Tip:

    If the data doesn’t have global IDs, you can add them using the Add Global IDs tool or you can right-click the data source in the Catalog pane and click Manage > Add Global IDs.

  4. Right-click a feature class or a stand-alone table and click Data Design > Attribute Rules.

    Note:

    The view is read-only when accessed from a web feature layer or a branch versioned database connection using a nondata owner account.

  5. On the Attribute Rules tab, click Ready to Use Rules Ready To Use Rules and click the Composite check in the Validation gallery group.
    Note:

    The contents of the Ready to Use Rules gallery vary depending on the chosen data source.

    A new row and grouping column are added to the Attribute Rules view and the Check Settings tab is activated.

  6. In the Composite check panel, configure common input parameters for the overall rule, including input filters, a defined error message, and details such as the rule’s name, description, severity, and tags.

  7. Continue to the next section to add Reviewer checks to your composite rule.

    The rule is not complete until you configure two or more checks.

Add Reviewer checks

To add checks to a Composite check-based rule, complete the following steps:

  1. Click an existing composite rule to edit in the Attribute Rules view or create a composite rule.
    Tip:

    If you're adding to an existing rule, ensure that the data is loaded and follow steps 4 through 6 in the previous section. If you are creating a rule, follow the steps in the previous section.

  2. On the Check Settings tab, expand the Ready to Use Checks gallery and click the first check to include in the rule.
    Note:

    You must have a composite check-based rule selected in the Attribute Rules view to activate the composite Check Settings tab. The contents of the Ready to Use Checks gallery vary depending on the chosen data source.

  3. In the check pane, configure check-specific settings.

    Each participating check contains a separate pane where check-specific parameters are set.

  4. Add at least one more check to the composite rule as outlined in the previous steps.

    Once you have added and configured a minimum of two checks for the composite rule, the row headers of the rule and participating checks turn green indicating that required parameters are valid.

    Note:

    The order in which checks are added to a composite rule do not impact its output.

  5. On the Attribute Rules tab, in the Attribute Rules group, click Save to save the updated or new rule.
    Note:

    ArcGIS Data Reviewer is backward-compatible with Reviewer rules created using earlier releases of ArcGIS Pro. Forward-compatibility is not possible at each ArcGIS Pro release because Reviewer rules continually evolve to support new functionality.

  6. Close the Attribute Rules view or add new rules to the input data source.

Delete a check

To delete a check from a new or existing composite rule, complete the following steps:

  1. In the Attribute Rules view, click the check to be deleted.
  2. On the Check Settings tab, in the Clipboard group, click Delete Check to remove the selected check from the rule.
  3. On the Attribute Rules tab, in the Attribute Rules group, click Save to save the updated rule.
    Note:

    ArcGIS Data Reviewer is backward-compatible with Reviewer rules created using earlier releases of ArcGIS Pro. Forward-compatibility is not possible at each ArcGIS Pro release because Reviewer rules continually evolve to support new functionality.

Delete a composite rule

Deleting a rule based on the Composite check deletes all participating checks in that rule. To delete a composite rule, complete the following steps:

  1. Click the rule.
  2. On the Attribute Rules tab, in the Attribute Rules group, click Delete Rule.
