Create point features along a line

In the Create Features pane, feature templates for point and multipoint layers include construction tools for creating point features at intervals along a selected line. You can specify the number of evenly spaced point features or create them at equal or varying distances.

3D point features are assigned z-values based on your current elevation settings.

Number of points

Specify how many point features you want to create evenly spaced along the selected feature. The tool calculates the distance between each feature. Point features at either end of the line feature are optional settings.

Number of Points
  1. If the current map does not contain a point or multipoint feature layer, add it.
    1. On the ribbon, click the View tab.
    2. In the Windows group, click Catalog Pane Catalog Pane and expand Databases Databases.
    3. Expand the default database or the database containing your data.

      To create a feature class, right-click the database, click New and click Feature Class.

      Note:

      Choose Multipoint to create multipoint features.

    4. Drag the feature class onto the map.

      A feature template is automatically created with default settings for the new layer.

  2. On the ribbon, click the Edit tab, confirm your snapping preferences and show the Create Features pane.
    1. In the Snapping group, click Snapping List By Snapping and confirm your snapping preferences.
    2. In the Features group, click Create Create Features.
  3. In the Create Features pane, click a point feature template.
  4. In the feature template, click the Active Template Forward arrow to view or change the attributes set for this template.
  5. In the Active Template pane, click the Points Along Line tool Points Along a Line.
  6. In the Create Points Along Line pane, click the Number of Points tab Number of Points.
  7. Click the Select tool Select and select the polyline feature along which you want to create point features.

    Note:
    If you select more than one feature, the selection appears in the pane. Click Unselect feature from map Clear Selected to remove a feature from the selection.
  8. The line length for the selected line appears in the pane. If you are working with different units, click the unit drop-down arrow and change the units.
  9. Check the following options to create point features at the ends of the line feature.
    At start of line

    Create a point feature at the start of the line feature in addition to the evenly spaced point features.

    At end of line

    Create a point feature at the end of the line feature in addition to the evenly spaced point features.

  10. In the Number of Points box, type the number of point features you want to create.
  11. Click Create.

Equal distance

Specify the equal distance between each point feature you want to create along the selected line feature. The tool calculates how many features to create measured from either the start or the end of the line. Creating point features at either end of the line feature is optional.

  1. If the current map does not contain a point or multipoint feature layer, add it.

    Note:

  8. The line length for the selected line appears in the pane. If you are working with different units, click the unit drop-down arrow and change the units.
  9. The direction from which the features are measured appears as a button. Click the button to change the direction.
    From Start

    Create the features measured from the start of the selected line feature.

    From End

    Create the features measured from the end of the selected line feature.

  10. Check the following options to create point features at the ends of the line feature.
    At start of line

    Create a point feature at the start of the line feature in addition to the evenly spaced point features.

    At end of line

    Create a point feature at the end of the line feature in addition to the evenly spaced point features.

  11. In the Distance box, type the distance at which every feature is to be evenly spaced.
  12. Click Create.

Varying distances

Specify the distance between each point feature you want to create along the selected line feature. The tool calculates how many features to create measured from either the start or the end of the line. Creating point features at either end of the line feature is optional.

  10. Check the following options to create point features at the ends of the line feature.
    At start of line

    Create a point feature at the start of the line feature in addition to the evenly spaced point features.

    At end of line

    Create a point feature at the end of the line feature in addition to the evenly spaced point features.

  11. Specify the distance between features and the number of features to be created for each distance. The remaining line length is reported in the pane.
    1. Click the first available field in the Distance column, type the distance, and press Enter.
    2. Click the corresponding field in the Number of Points column, type how many features you want to create sequentially at this distance.

    Repeat this step until all points and distances are entered in the table.

  12. Click Create.
