There are many situations in which you may want to review route measures and their values, for example, viewing the measure in hours to reach the end of a hiking trail.
Explore tool
You can view route measures using the Explore tool , which is one of the main navigation tools located on the Map tab in the Navigate group. It can also be found on the contextual Linear Referencing tab in the Navigate group.
When using the Explore tool to view linear features that contain measured values (m-values), six additional measure fields display in the pop-up when you click a feature.
Note:
By default, six additional measure fields display in the pop-up when you identify a linear feature that contains measure values. However, you may encounter a scenario where these additional measure fields do not display in the pop-up. This may be the result of fields being disabled. See Configure pop-ups to learn how to configure and enable fields to display in pop-ups.Field name | Description |

Measure | Displays the measure for the identified linear feature. Note:Viewing m-values in the measure field is not supported for global and local scenes. |
Minimum Measure | Displays the minimum measure for the identified linear feature. |
Maximum Measure | Displays the maximum measure for the identified linear feature. |
Measure Values | Displays measure behavior such as increasing, decreasing, NaNs (NaN is an acronym for Not a Number), and levels within the identified linear feature. |
Parts | Displays the number of segments (for instance, if the linear feature is split) that comprise the identified linear feature. |
All Measures Unknown | A Boolean value (true/false) indicating whether all measure values contain NaNs. |
Measure Values
M-values are set when routes are created or when measures are updated. The Measure Values field describes the behavior of the measure values in the route.
For Increasing and Increasing, Decreasing, the digitized direction of the linear feature does not matter. For example, you can have two linear features where the first linear feature's measures start at 1 and end at 3, and a second linear feature's measures start at 3 and end at 1. In both cases, the returned measure values will display Strictly Increasing.
Levels indicate when m-values in the route are repeated at consecutive vertices. For example, a route that contains a highway quality rating of 5 for two or more consecutive vertices would show levels in the Measure Values field along with any other behavior observed, such as NaNs.
NaN displays when a measure within a linear feature does not contain a value. NaNs automatically populate vertices unless a value is provided when a route is created or updated afterward.
The 10 possible measure values seen in the Measure Values field are as follows:
- Strictly Increasing
- Increasing with Levels
- Increasing with NaN's
- Increasing with Levels and NaN's
- Increasing, Decreasing
- Increasing, Decreasing with Levels
- Increasing, Deceasing with NaN's
- Increasing, Decreasing with Levels and NaN's
- Levels with NaN's
- NaN's

To view route measures, complete the following steps:
Note:
The six route measure fields only display in the pop-up for features that contain measure values.- On the ribbon, click either the Map tab or the contextual Linear Referencing tab. In the Navigate group, ensure that the Explore tool is selected.
- Use one of the following methods:
- On the map, click a linear feature with measures.
The Pop-up pane appears with attributes for the identified feature along with six additional fields that display at the bottom of the list when the identified feature contains measures.
- On the map, press Ctrl and drag a box over the desired linear features.
Note:
The Measure field will not contain a value since multiple locations in a linear feature are identified. To view a measure, identify an individual location.
- On the map, click a linear feature with measures.
- In the Pop-up pane, scroll down, if necessary, to see all the attributes.
