Three options have a significant impact on user workflows, found in the General section on the Network Diagram tab on the Network Options dialog box:
- Automatically zoom to full extent after any editing operation executed on the entire diagram
- Open diagrams with all diagram template sublayers
- Use default parameters to apply layouts

Automatically zoom to full extent after any editing operation executed on the entire diagram
This option is considered each time a network diagram editing operation applies to the entire diagram; that is, the system doesn't consider this option when such an operation executes on a set of diagram features currently selected in the diagram:
- Checked—The system zooms to the full extent of the network diagram each time a layout algorithm is applied on the entire diagram or after operations such as update diagram, append to diagram, extend diagram, or overwrite diagram.
- Not checked—The display extent of the network diagram does not change at the end of any layout algorithm run or after operations such as update diagram, append to diagram, extend diagram, or overwrite diagram.
This option is checked by default, causing the display extent of the active diagram to automatically change at the end of any network diagram editing operation that applies to the entire diagram content.
If you intentionally zoom in on a diagram portion to execute operations for which you want to analyze the impact on that particular diagram portion—for example, extending the diagram or appending network features or network objects to the diagram—uncheck this option before running the operation. The diagram map view stays centered on the portion you are focusing on at the end of the operation.
Note:
The Automatically zoom to full extent after any editing operation executed on the entire diagram option only applies to network diagram editing operations; that is, applying layouts to diagrams, extending diagrams, updating diagrams, overwriting diagrams, or appending network elements to diagrams.
It does not apply when editing diagram features using core editing tools—such as edit vertices or move features—because the extent of the diagram itself is not recalculated on the fly at the end of these editing tasks. This means that, at the end of a core editing operation sequence, users must manually proceed in two steps:
- Click Recalculate Diagram Extent in the Modify group of the Network Diagram tab to force recalculating the extent of the active network diagram extent.
- Click Full Extent in the Navigate group of the Network Diagram tab to force the display extent to fit the diagram extent.
Open diagrams with all diagram template sublayers
This option is considered at any diagram opening whether the open diagram is temporary or stored:
- Checked—The All Layers mode on the Manage group on the Network Diagram tab is turned on for each network diagram layer at its loading by default; that is, any diagram opens with all the sublayers as specified in its diagram template layer definition whether they contain diagram features or not. This means that all sublayers set on the related diagram template are present in the Contents pane, even those not used.
- Not checked—The All Layers mode on the Manage group on the Network Diagram tab is turned off for each network diagram layer at its loading by default; that is, any diagram opens with the only diagram template sublayers that contain diagram features. This means that only the required sublayers among those set on the related diagram template are present in the Contents pane.
By default, the Open diagrams with all diagram template sublayers option is unchecked; that is, any network diagram layer displays with the All Layers mode turned off by default on the Manage group on the Network Diagram tab. Running with this option unchecked allows you to gain performance at any diagram opening, especially when only a few layers are required to display all the diagram features. Use this mode to open diagrams for simple viewing, applying diagram layouts, or white space editing.

However, check this option before working with network diagrams for which you already know that the content is going to be increased or decreased during your workflow, for example, when you are going to work with the Dynamic Diagram mode, or execute commands such as Extend Diagram, Append to Diagram, or Overwrite Diagram to refine your diagram content. You will typically execute these operations when working with diagrams to control network connectivity or explore the network.

Note:
In all cases, you can also switch the network diagram layer you are working on to the other mode at any time by clicking the All Layers button on the Manage group on the Network Diagram tab. Be aware that manually turning this mode on or off is time consuming for network diagram layers that are already loaded.

Use default parameters to apply layouts
This option is considered each time you click any layout item in the gallery to apply a layout algorithm to the active diagram:
- Checked—Any layout you choose in the layout gallery directly applies to the active diagram with its default parameters. This is the default.
- Not checked—For any layout you apply to the active diagram, clicking its layout icon in the layout gallery makes the related geoprocessing tool open in the Geoprocessing pane window. Then, you can change the layout parameters before applying it.
The option is checked by default, causing any clicked layout to directly apply to the active diagram and process using its default settings. This means that the algorithm's in-house default parameter values are considered by default unless the active network diagram is based on a template for which the layout algorithm has been explicitly configured with other default parameter values.
Running with this option checked allows you to save time when applying a layout on your network diagrams.
