Create a terminal configuration

Terminals represent logical connection points on a single device feature or junction object. A key use of terminals is to define start and endpoints of subnetwork traces. Terminals are also used to establish paths within a feature through which a commodity can travel.

To establish a terminal configuration, the Add Terminal Configuration tool is used. Once a terminal configuration has been added, it can be assigned at the asset group and asset type levels for a feature or object using the Set Terminal Configuration tool. To add a new terminal configuration to a utility network, the following requirements must be met:

To add a terminal configuration to a utility network, complete the following steps:

  1. On the Analysis tab, in the Geoprocessing group, click Tools Tools to open the Geoprocessing pane.
  2. In the Geoprocessing pane, search for and select Add Terminal Configuration.
  3. For the Input Utility Network parameter, specify the utility network for which to create the terminal configuration.
  4. For the Name parameter, specify a name for the terminal configuration.

    The name cannot exceed 32 characters.

  5. In the Directionality parameter, choose one of the following:
    • Directional—Specifies distinct upstream and downstream terminals; the network commodity travels one direction through certain terminals and out through the others.
    • Bidirectional—Specifies that there are no distinct upstream and downstream terminals; the network commodity can travel in either direction through the device, entering and exiting through any terminal.
  6. For the Terminals parameter, specify a name for each terminal to be included in the terminal configuration.

    A minimum of two and a maximum of eight terminals may be specified. The name of each terminal cannot exceed 32 characters and cannot contain a comma or hyphen. For terminals that have Directionality set to Directional, specify whether the terminal is upstream using the check box.

  7. If three or four terminals are specified in step 6, Valid Path(s) must be set to indicate which of the paths within a network feature are valid for a resource to travel through.

    Provide a name and enter a value for each valid path. The Value for the Valid Path(s) parameter must either be All, None, or contain valid terminal pairs.

    • All—Enter a value of All to create an option that indicates all paths are valid.
    • None—Enter a value of None to create an option that indicates that no paths are valid.
    • Terminal pair(s)—Enter a single or collection of terminal pairs. Enter a single terminal pair by specifying the path from one terminal to another separated by a hyphen, for example, A-B. Enter a collection of terminal pairs separated by a comma, for example, A-B, A-C.
  8. For the Default Path parameter, specify a default path from the names specified in the Valid Path(s) parameter.

    This path will be assigned to new features that have this terminal configuration assigned. If no valid paths are set in step 7, you can choose between the values of All or None for this parameter.

    • All—Indicates all paths are valid.
    • None—Indicates no paths are valid.
    • Valid path—Specify a valid path defined in step 7.
  9. Click Run.

A terminal configuration is created. To apply this terminal configuration to features in the utility network, assign the configuration to the feature at the asset group and asset type levels using the Set Terminal Configuration tool.
