Extend or trim a polyline feature

The Extend or Trim tool Extend or Trim extends or trims a line feature to an existing feature boundary. You can extend or trim with the same tool or use one of two preset tools that exclusively extend or trim. This tool is available in the Modify Features pane.

Extend or trim a selected line

To extend a selected line, hover over the boundary to which the preview extends and click it. To trim a selected line, hover over the intersection and click it where the dashed preview terminates.

  1. On the Edit tab, choose your snapping preferences, and show the Modify Features pane.
    1. In the Snapping group, click the Snapping drop-down menu List By Snapping and enable your snapping preferences.

      To temporarily turn snapping off while you edit a feature, press and hold the spacebar.

    2. In the Features group, click Modify Modify Features.
  2. In the tool pane, expand Reshape, and click Extend or Trim Extend or Trim.
    • To close the tool, press Esc.
  3. Select the features.
    1. Uncheck Allow Extend or Trim without a selection.

    2. Click the Select tool Active Select and select the feature.
    • To refine the selection in the tree view, click a feature to flash it in the map, and double-click to select it and unselect all other features.
    • Alternatively, right-click the feature and click Only Select This Unselect.

  4. If the feature is COGO-enabled, check Recalculate COGO attributes to update the COGO attributes to reflect your changes.
    Note:

    This setting is available only when a map includes a COGO-enabled layer.

  5. The active tool appears highlighted. To change it, click one of the available tools.

  6. To extend the selected line, hover over the boundary to which the preview extends and click it.

    The preview appears as a continuous line.

  7. To trim the selected line, hover over the intersection and click it where the dashed preview terminates.

    Note:

    Trimming with a selection automatically chooses the shorter segment. To trim the longer segment, trim without a selection.

To extend a line without a selection, hover over the line and click it when the preview extends to a destination boundary. To trim a line without a selection, hover over the line and click it when the dashed preview terminates at the destination boundary.
