Install supplementary coordinate system files

Some geographic transformations (for example, NTv2, GEOCON, and NADCON5) and vertical transformations based on geoids, quasi-geoids, or other conversion grids (for example, EGM and VERTCON) require files that are not installed with ArcGIS Pro. You can download and install these files with the ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data software component from My Esri.

When working with very accurate geographic transformations or with 3D datasets, the ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data component is recommended. See the list of supported geographic and vertical transformations to find which transformations require these grid files.

Download from My Esri

There are two installation packages available for ArcGIS Pro with the same transformation files. ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data can be installed per-machine for every user and works with ArcGIS Enterprise and ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap). Only one installation is required for all three products on the same machine.

If you do not have administrative privileges to make a per-machine installation, or you performed a per-user installation of ArcGIS Pro, you must use the ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data for ArcGIS Pro per-user installation. In this case, the software component is installed to your user account location, <System Drive>\Users\<username>.

Follow these steps to download the ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data software component from My Esri.

  1. Go to My Esri.
  2. Click the My Organization tab and click the Downloads tab.
    Note:

If there is no Downloads tab, it means that you are not authorized to download the software. Click the Request Permissions side tab. You can complete a form to request download permission from your software administrator, or you can click the Contact My Administrator button to send a direct message.

  3. In the list of available products, next to ArcGIS Pro, confirm that the version number (for example, 3.0) is correct and click View Downloads.
    Note:

If you have not previously agreed to the terms and conditions of the master agreement, a pop-up window appears. After reviewing the terms and conditions, check the check box and click Accept if you want to continue.

  4. On the Download Components tab, scroll to the Data and Content list.
  5. In the Action column, click the Download button for the applicable ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data installation package.

An executable file (.exe) is downloaded to your computer.

Install ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data

After you install ArcGIS Pro and download ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data, you can install the software component.

The following are the default installation locations:

  • Per-machine installation—<System Drive>\Program Files (x86)\ArcGIS\CoordinateSystemsData
  • Per-user installation—<System Drive>\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Programs\ArcGIS\CoordinateSystemsData

Follow the steps below to install ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data.

  1. Browse to the location where you downloaded ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data, and double-click the executable file to start the installation process.
  2. Accept the destination folder to which files are extracted, or click Browse to select a different folder.

The default destination folder is <System Drive>\Users\<username>\Documents\ArcGIS Pro <version>.

  3. Click Next.

A message indicates when the files have been successfully extracted, and the Launch the setup program check box is checked by default.

    Note:

If you want to install the software later, uncheck the Launch the setup program check box. When you're ready to install, browse to the destination folder and double-click ArcGISPro.msi.

  4. Click Close.
  5. In the Welcome to the ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data Setup program window, click Next.
  6. Review the license agreement and choose an option:
    • If you agree to the terms, click the option to accept the agreement and click Next.
    • If you do not agree to the terms, click Cancel to exit the installation.
  7. Optionally, in the Select Features window, choose the grids to exclude from the installation. Click the corresponding button in the list and choose This feature will not be available.
  8. In the same window, accept the default installation folder location, or click Change to specify a different folder.
  9. Click Next.
  10. Click Install.
  11. When the installation is complete, click Finish.

Install additional transformation grids

For some grid-based geographic and vertical transformations, ArcGIS Pro includes their definitions but does not distribute the grid files due to license restrictions. The required grid files may need to be purchased directly from their third-party provider or government agency.

Once these grid files are obtained, you can add them to a specific CoordinateSystemsData\pedata subfolder on your machine. Files are sorted into folders by transformation method name, such as NTv2 or vertical\geoid. NTv2 files are further sorted into a country folder. For detailed instructions, contact your local distributor.
