Find all features connected to a given set of starting points in your network with the Trace tool using the Connected trace type. To learn more, see Trace network trace types. The Connected trace travels a network based on connectivity and ignores traversability.
Requirements
To perform a connected trace, the following requirements must be met:
The network topology must be enabled.
One or more starting points must exist.
Trace connected features
To find connected features in the network through a trace, complete the following steps:
- Ensure the trace network is added to an active map.
This enables the trace network's Trace Network tab.
- Click the Trace Network tab.
- Ensure that one or more starting points exist in the map view. In the Tools group, click the Trace Locations command to open the Trace Locations pane. Set starting points and barriers to use in the trace.
- On the Trace Network tab, in the Tools group gallery, click Connected.
The Trace tool opens for the trace network in the active map using a connected Trace Type.
- Apply additional configuration parameters as needed. Reference the Trace tool for a full list of tool parameters.
- Click Run.
A group of connected features is returned as a result selection set.
Caution:
Performing a connected trace on a large dataset without specifying additional configuration parameters could result in a long-running trace operation by attempting to visit every connected feature in the network.
It is recommended that you constrain the traced features by setting barrier features or specifying other trace configuration parameters. For example, when performing a connected trace, parameters in the Advanced Options section enable you to configure condition barriers using a network attribute to control which features are traversable by the trace.
