Message: This annotation layer is from an earlier release

This message is displayed on the Editing Status dialog box.

Cause

The annotation layer is from an earlier release. The annotation can still be edited, but any properties new to version 3.x will not be saved. You can view the version of the annotation feature class on the Source tab of the Feature Class Properties dialog box.

Solution

Upgrade the annotation feature class using the Upgrade Dataset geoprocessing tool.
