Similar to ArcMap, ArcGlobe, and ArcScene, you are presented with several options when you start ArcGIS Pro: create a new file, open an existing one, or use a template to create a new file. With ArcGIS Pro, you create a project, which stores maps, scenes, and layouts. You can also choose to create a Catalog project, which provides an experience similar to ArcCatalog.
The table below summarizes the files created in different parts of ArcGIS Desktop and what they are in ArcGIS Pro.
| ArcGIS Desktop application | Type of file created on startup | Equivalent project in ArcGIS Pro |
|---|---|---|
| ArcMap | Map | Map |
| ArcCatalog | N/A | Catalog |
| ArcGlobe | Globe | Global Scene |
| ArcScene | Scene | Local Scene |
