Define a portion of a route

The Define Line Portion tool Define Line Portion allows you to update measures along a portion of a route feature between two selected points. This tool is available in the Modify Features pane.

When you use this tool to edit m-values, consider the following:

  • As you trace along a selected route, the current measure near the pointer and the distance between the start of the route and the pointer are reported in a pop-up.
  • Route measures are dynamically updated in the properties table in the pane as you modify them with the m-value commands.

To define a portion of a route, complete the following steps:

  1. Add your data and configure settings for editing.

Confirm the feature layer you are editing is editable, the coordinate system assigned to the active map is suitable for the type of edits you're performing, and snapping is configured to help you work efficiently and accurately.

  2. On the ribbon Edit tab, click Modify Modify Features in the Features group.

    The Modify Features pane appears.

  3. Click the Define Line Portion tool Define Line Portion in the Modify Features pane.

To find the tool, expand the Route category, or type Route in the Search text box.

  4. To highlight the selected portion of the route when you click two points, check the Show Preview check box.
  5. Click the Select tool Active Select, and select the route feature.

If you select more than one feature, reselect the feature. Alternatively, click the feature in the pane selection view to flash it in the map, right-click and click Only Select This List By Selection.

  6. Click the first point on the linear route, trace along the feature with the pointer, and click the second point.

Select a portion of a route.

As you trace along a selected route, the current measure near the pointer and the distance between the start of the route and the pointer are reported in a pop-up.

    Tip:

To snap to specific feature geometry without changing your snapping preferences, right-click, click Snap to Feature and choose a snap agent.

The vertices and measures comprising the selected portion appear in the properties table.

  7. Hover over a segment in the selected portion.
  8. When the pointer changes to the segment cursor Segment cursor, right-click the segment, click M Value, and choose one of the commands described in the following table:

Insert Vertex At M Insert Vertex At M

Insert a vertex at a specified Measure value in the same direction in which the m-values are increasing.

    Apply Factor Apply Factor

Multiply all m-values by a specified Factor value.

    Offset Offset

Sum each m-value with a specified Offset value.

    Calculate NaN Calculate NaN

Replace all unknown (NaN) m-values with a value that is interpolated or extrapolated from existing m-values.

    Drop Measures

Reset all m-values to unknown (NaN).

Set As Distance Set As Distance

Assign m-values to all vertices starting with a specified Starting M value and interpolating the remaining values across the geometry length of the feature.

    Set From/To Set From/To

Assign the specified From and To m-values to the start and end of the feature, respectively.

Set Direction As M Set Direction As M

Flip the geometry direction to match the direction in which the m-values are increasing.

  9. To finish the feature, right-click and click Finish Finish, or press the F2 key.
