Replace colors

You can replace colors in a map, layout, or style from the catalog view using the Replace Colors tool. This tool can be used to update colors in a map and includes specification-driven color changes, in which updates are applied to all colors in a map product.

Note:

You can display a list of keyboard shortcuts that can be used to open the tool for a map, layout, or style by expanding Catalog > View in the Keyboard Shortcuts dialog box. Shortcuts are listed in alphabetical order.

Replace colors in a map

Use the Current Color column and the Target Color column of the tool to replace the color of symbol parts in a map.

Complete the following steps to access and update one or all of the colors in a map:

  1. Click the View tab on the ribbon.
  2. In the Windows group, click Catalog View Catalog View.

    The catalog view appears.

  3. In the catalog view, double-click the Maps folder.

    The maps in the Maps folder are listed and the Manage contextual tab appears on the ribbon.

  4. Click the map that you want to update in the catalog view.
  5. Click the Manage tab and click Replace Colors Replace Colors.

    The Replace Colors dialog box appears with the map item that you want to update on the Item drop-down menu.

    Tip:

    You can choose a different map from the Item drop-down menu.

  6. Click Load Colors.

    The map colors are loaded in the Replace colors section. The map's current colors are loaded in both the Current Color and Target Color columns. The current colors and target colors are the same unless you change them.

  7. Do any of the following to update colors:
    • Click a target color's drop-down arrow and choose a different color from the ArcGIS Colors palette.
    • Click Add color Add color in the Replace colors section to add a new row of colors.
    • Choose a color in the Replace colors section and click Remove colors Remove colors to delete the color or colors. Click colors while pressing the Ctrl key to choose multiple colors individually, or click the first color then press and hold the Shift key while clicking the final color to specify a range.
    • Click Load colors from color mapping file Load colors from color mapping file in the Replace colors section to open a color mapping file (.ccrx).
    Tip:

    Click the Save colors to color mapping file button Save colors to color mapping file to export the colors to a .ccrx file that can be reused across maps, layouts, and styles.

  8. Do either of the following to replace the colors in the map:
    • Click Update existing and click OK to replace the colors in the existing map.
    • Click Create new, provide a name for the new map in the text box, and click OK to create a new copy of the map with the replacement colors.

    The map colors are updated. If you created a new copy of the map, it is added to the list of maps in the Maps folder.

Replace colors in a layout

When applied to a layout, the colors of symbol parts can be replaced.

Complete the following steps to access and update one or all of the colors in a layout:

  1. Click the View tab on the ribbon.
  2. In the Windows group, click Catalog View Catalog View.

    The catalog view appears.

  3. In the catalog view, double-click the Layouts folder.

    The layouts in the Layouts folder appear and the Manage contextual tab appears on the ribbon.

  4. Click the layout that you want to update in the catalog view.
  5. Click the Manage tab.
  6. On the Manage tab, click Replace Colors Replace Colors.

    The Replace Colors dialog box appears with the layout item that you want to update on the Item drop-down menu.

    Tip:

    You can choose a different layout from the Item drop-down menu.

  7. Click Load Colors.

    The layout colors are loaded in the Replace colors section. The layout's current colors are loaded in both the Current Color and Target Color columns. The current colors and target colors are the same unless you change them.

  8. Do any of the following to update colors:
    • Click a target color's drop-down arrow and choose a different color from the ArcGIS Colors palette.
    • Click Add color Add color in the Replace colors section to add a new row of colors.
    • Choose a color in the Replace colors section and click Remove colors Remove colors to delete the color or colors.   9. Do either of the following to apply the color updates:
    • Click Update existing and click OK to apply updates to the existing layout.
    • Click Create new, type a name for the new layout in the text box, and click OK to apply updates to a new copy of the layout.

    The layout colors are updated. If it's a new layout, it is added to the layouts list in the Layouts folder.

Replace colors for a selected item in a style

When applied to a custom style, colors of all symbol parts can be replaced.

Complete the following steps to access and update colors in a style:

  1. Click the View tab on the ribbon.
  2. In the Windows group, click Catalog View Catalog View.

    The catalog view appears.

  3. In the catalog view, double-click the Styles folder.

    The styles in the Styles folder appear in the catalog view and the Manage tab appears on the ribbon.

  4. Click the style that you want to update in the catalog view.
  5. On the Manage tab, click the Replace Colors button Replace Colors.

    The Replace Colors dialog box appears with the style item active on the Item drop-down menu.

    Tip:

    Click the Item drop-down arrow to choose a different style.

  6. Click Load Colors.

    The style colors are loaded in the Replace colors section, with the active colors in the Current color column and target colors in the Target color column. The active color and the target color are the same unless you change them.

  7. Do any of the following to update colors:
    • Click a target color's drop-down arrow and choose a different color from the ArcGIS Colors palette.
    • Click Add color Add color in the Replace colors section to add a new row of colors.
    • Choose a color in the Replace colors section and click Remove colors Remove colors to delete the color or colors. Click colors while pressing the Ctrl key to choose multiple colors individually, or click the first color then press and hold the Shift key while clicking the final color to specify a range.
    • Click Load colors from color mapping file Load colors from color mapping file in the Replace colors section to open a color mapping file (.ccrx).

    • Click OK while the Update existing option is chosen to apply updates to the existing style.
    • Click the Create new option, provide a name for the new style in the text box, and click OK to apply updates to a new copy of the style.

    The style colors are updated. If it's a new style, it is added to the styles list in the Styles folder.
