Get started with ArcGIS Defense Mapping

Available with Defense Mapping license.

The ArcGIS Defense Mapping extension streamlines geographic information systems (GIS) for defense agencies and contractors who are responsible for map production that supports mission-critical applications. Capabilities included with the extension help automate the production process from beginning to end by configuring standards that can be repeated.

Defense Mapping includes the Topographic Production toolbox for data collection, data attribution, data validation, and geodatabase maintenance. The extension also provides product data files that include geodatabase models, topologies, business rules, cartographic rules, and map templates that are required for Topographic Map (TM), Multinational Geospatial Co-Production Program (MGCP) Topographic Map (MTM), Image City Map (ICM), and others.

Defense Mapping provides the following capabilities:

  • Production management—Managers can gain insight into the status of their organization's work so they can identify what is at risk and prioritize or reassign work. New work can also be created from an included web app.
  • Data maintenance—Defense Mapping can reduce the time to compile and maintain authoritative defense content. It helps perform database maintenance and quality control for data and map products. You can ensure consistency by capturing and distributing best practices throughout the organization.
  • Cartographic maintenance—Automate cartographic processes for defense mapping with tools to create and manage the production of high-quality printed maps.
  • Automated generalization—Defense Mapping includes out-of-the-box generalization models that use a single-best-scale database to automate the creation of maps, charts, and data products at different scales based on the unique characteristics of different data themes.
  • Consistent workflows—Defense Mapping workflows was built using the ArcGIS Workflow Manager (Classic) and includes task-based workflows with authoritative defense schemas. Each workflow is designed as a focused task to be performed by a single technician.

Supported data models

The Defense Mapping product files support the industry specifications and are available from My Esri as an ArcGIS Pro additional download.

Defense Mapping supports the specifications described in the following table:

Specification nameDescription

Topographic Data Store (TDS)

Collect topographic features at different scales according to the TDS Entity Catalog (EC). The TDS EC is a subset of the National System for Geospatial Intelligence (NSG) EC and contains primarily topographic features.

Multinational Geospatial Co-production Program (MGCP)

Collect MGCP-compliant topographic data according to the latest MGCP Technical Reference Document (TRD).

MGCP Urban Vector Data (MUVD)

Collect MUVD-compliant topographic data according to the latest MUVD TRD.
