Add an INT2 scale bar to a layout

Scale bars provide a visual indication of distance and feature size on a map. A scale bar is a line or bar divided into parts. It is labeled with its ground length, usually in multiples of map units, such as tens of kilometers or hundreds of miles. Scale bars are associated with a map frame in a layout. If the map scale for that map frame changes, the scale bar updates to remain correct.

The International Hydrography Organization (IHO) INT2 standard defines the scale bars for use on nautical charts. INT2 scale bars are categorized based on the chart scale, and each category specifies the division values that are appropriate for the defined scale range.

The following table describes the type of scale bar, the associated map scale, and the resulting intervals and minor subdivisions:

ArcGIS Maritime includes preconfigured scale bars that follow the IHO INT2 guidance. These scale bars are available in the INT1 style file that is provided with the Maritime product data files.

Add the INT1 style file

To access the INT2 scale bar gallery, add the INT1 style to an ArcGIS Pro project by completing the following steps:

  1. Start ArcGIS Pro.
  2. Open a project containing the chart layout to which you want to add a scale bar.
  3. On the ribbon, click the Insert tab.
  4. In the Styles group, click Add Add Style, and click Add Style Add Style.
    Tip:

Alternatively, right-click the Styles folder Styles Folder in the Catalog pane, and click Add > Add Style.

  5. On the Add a style file dialog box, browse to the INT1 style file at <installation_location>\ArcGIS Maritime\Product Files\<version>\Charting\Symbols.
  6. Click the INT1.stylx file and click OK to add it to the project.

The INT1 style file is added to the project and appears in the Styles folder Styles Folder on the Project tab in the Catalog pane. You can now access the INT2 scale bars from the Scale Bar gallery.

Insert an INT2 scale bar

To insert an INT2 scale bar, complete the following steps:

  1. Ensure that the chart layout to which you want to add the scale bar is active.

Scale bars can only be added to layout views. They cannot be added to map views.

  2. On the Insert tab, in the Map Surrounds group, click the Scale Bar drop-down arrow New Scale Bar to open the Scale Bar gallery.
  3. In the INT2 group, choose the INT2 standard scale bar that matches the specifications of the chart.
  4. Click anywhere on the layout to add the INT2 scale bar.
  5. Drag the INT2 scale bar to the desired position.

The INT2 scale bars provided with the Maritime product data files are based on the IHO INT2 specification. The default background color of the scale bars is white so that they can be placed over the outside neatline of the grid.
