Load source data

Available with ArcGIS Maritime license.

You can access different types of source data when producing nautical data in ArcGIS Pro; most source data is in raster or vector format. Raster data can be digitized, while vector format data can be imported or copied to a geodatabase. Choose the appropriate workflow below based on the type of source data you are using.

Digitize from raster data

With ArcGIS Maritime, you can use a variety of raster formats as source data for S-57 production.

To digitize data from a raster image, complete the following steps:

  1. On the Map tab, in the Layer group, click Add Data Add Data.

The Add Data dialog box appears.

  2. Browse to the raster image that you want to load as a backdrop layer and click OK.
    Note:

Ensure that the image is georeferenced.

  3. Optionally, change the transparency of the feature layer to collect data on top of the raster layer without needing to consider the draw order.
  4. Choose the appropriate feature layer or subtype in the Create Features pane and digitize the feature from the raster image.
  5. Optionally, further refine the feature attributes.

Load vector data

Vector data can come in many different formats, including shapefiles, DGN files (design), and other data types. Existing S-57 data can be imported directly to a geodatabase using the Import S-57 To Geodatabase tool. For vector source data, you can use copy and paste tools to copy the geometry from the source data to a geodatabase. The ArcGIS Data Interoperability extension further expands the number of third-party software formats available as data sources for ArcGIS Pro.

To load source data to a geodatabase and export it to the S-57 format, complete the following steps:

  1. Load source data into a geodatabase using the Import S-57 To Geodatabase tool or by copying and pasting.
    Tip:

If copying and pasting, click Paste Special to streamline this activity by choosing the appropriate feature class or subtype for the target layer.

  2. Create new data if necessary.
  3. Validate the data.
  4. Export the data to S-57 format.
  5. Package the S-57 products.
