The Glossary Table element is a table that provides a list of terms or symbols and their descriptions. Understanding the symbols used in the map help interpret it accurately.
Insert the Glossary Table element
The Glossary Table element can be inserted on any map layout with data.
To insert the Glossary Table element, complete the following steps:
- Ensure that a layout with a map frame is open and is the active view in your project.
- Click the Insert tab.
- Click the Additional Surrounds drop-down arrow and click Glossary Table in the Topographic group.
- Click the layout where you want to insert the element.
The element is added to the layout.
Modify the Glossary Table element
To modify the properties and appearance of the Glossary Table element using the options on the Glossary Table contextual tab, as well as the Element pane, complete the following steps:
- Open the layout that contains the Glossary Table element that you want to modify and ensure that it is the active view in the project.
- Click the Glossary Table element in the Contents pane.
The Glossary Table contextual tab appears.
- Click the element's contextual tab and update the element properties as necessary.
Not all of the element's properties are available on this tab.
- Double-click the element in the Contents pane to open the Element pane and update more element properties as necessary:
Tip:
You can also right-click the element on the layout or in the Contents pane and click Properties to open the Element pane.
- In the Element pane, click the Options tab .
- On the Options tab , expand General, and configure the element options as necessary.
- Provide a unique name for the element in the Name text box.
This is the name that is used to identify the element in the Contents pane.
- Specify whether the element is visible by checking or unchecking the Visible check box.
The default is visible.
- Specify whether the element is locked so that changes cannot be made by checking or unchecking the Locked check box.
The default is unlocked.
- Provide a unique name for the element in the Name text box.
- Expand Source, and do the following:
- Click the Map frame drop-down arrow and choose the map frame layer to associate with the Glossary Table element.
The map frame properties, including which map the map frame is associated with, can be configured in the Element pane when the map frame layer is selected.
Tip:
Hover over the map frame layer to review the map that the map frame is associated with.
- Click the Table drop-down arrow and specify the feature class that contains the features that will populate the Glossary Table element.
- Click the Map frame drop-down arrow and choose the map frame layer to associate with the Glossary Table element.
- Expand Glossary Table and configure the element's title and delimiter properties as follows:
- Provide a title for the element in the Title text box.
- Click the Delimiter drop-down arrow and choose one of the following characters to use in the feature attribute values:
- Space
- Period
- Hyphen
- Underscore
- Expand Fields to set the attribute fields from which to pull values for Term, Definition, and Auxiliary Definition.
- Click the Field drop-down arrow and choose the attribute field that contains the associated value for each Glossary Table element component.
- Provide a column label value in the Column Heading text box.
This value appears at the top of the column in the element.
- Click Options to configure additional display options.
- Expand Accessibility and provide a description for the surround element in the Alt Text text box.
- Optionally, click the Arrangement tab and adjust the element's fitting strategy and spacing options.
- Optionally, click the Placement tab and adjust the element's size and position.
A Glossary Table element with terms and corresponding definitions is added to the layout.
