Share and run a suitability model on servers

Available with Spatial Analyst license.

You can run either the suitability or locate steps of the Suitability Modeler workflow on servers using ArcGIS Pro as a client. The resulting maps will be web imagery layers. For additional information, see Run the suitability and locate steps on servers.

The following are examples of when you may want to run the full model, including the suitability and locate steps, as a stand-alone process on servers:

• You are working with web imagery layers on servers.
• The source rasters for the input criteria are big data, and you want to improve the processing speeds.
• You built a model, and you want to run the entire model at full resolution in a single step.
• You want to share the model and the resulting web imagery layers on servers to use in a collaborative environment.

Share and run a suitability model

To run the suitability model on servers, the model must first be shared to create a Suitability Model portal item. The resulting portal item can then be run.

Share the model

To share a suitability model to create a Suitability Model portal item, complete the following steps:

1. Sign in to a server.
2. Create a suitability model using the Suitability Modeler.

   Only criteria or submodels that are web imagery layers can be included in the shared model. You can create web imagery layers from any criteria whose source is pointing to local raster datasets using the Sources tab. Alternatively, if a web imagery layer of the criterion already exists, you can replace the raster dataset with the web imagery layer using the drop-down list on the Sources tab or by browsing to it.

   When using the Sources tab to create a web imagery layer of a suitability map from a submodel, the suitability map must have been run at full resolution. This is done by clicking the Run button on the Suitability tab when creating the submodel.

3. On the Suitability Modeler ribbon, in the Suitability Model group, click Save or Save as to save the model.

   If additional changes are made to the model, you must save the model again before sharing it.

4. On the Suitability Modeler ribbon, in the Web group, click the Share to Portal button .

   The Share Suitability Model dialog box appears.

5. On the Share Suitability Model dialog box, do the following:
   1. Provide a name for the Suitability Model portal item.
   2. Provide a summary of the model.
   3. Provide tags that can be searched.
   4. Provide the location where the Suitability Model portal item will be saved on the portal.
   5. Check Everyone or ArcGIS Enterprise depending on how you want to share the model.

   6. Click Share to create the Suitability Model portal item.

A Suitability Model portal item is created on the server. Access the portal item by browsing to it from the Catalog pane. Alternatively, sign in to the server. Use the portal home app to browse to the location where you created the Suitability Model portal item.

Run the Suitability Model portal item

To run the Suitability Model portal item from ArcGIS Pro as a client, complete the following steps:

1. In ArcGIS Pro, ensure that you are signed in to the server on which you created the Suitability Model portal item.
2. From the Catalog pane, browse to the Suitability Model portal item.

   It does not matter whether the Suitability Modeler is open.

3. Right-click the Suitability Model portal item and click Run.

   If there are multiple models in the portal item, click the model you want to run.

On the server, two web imagery layers are created in the root directory of My Contents on the active portal.

Output

Two output web imagery layers are created when you run the model on the server using ArcGIS Pro as a client:

• The suitability map at full resolution
• The locate map at full resolution

The resulting suitability web imagery layer is named in the form of [ModelName]_Suitability_map_[Date]. The [ModelName] portion is the name of the model and [Date] is a unique identifier using the date when the service was created. For example, running a shared model for bear suitability on March 3, 2022, results in a suitability web imagery layer named BearModel_Suitability_map_202203081313089.

The name of the resulting locate web imagery layer is in the form of [ModelName]_Suitable_locations_[Date]. For example, BearModel_Suitable_locations_202203081314983 is the name of the web imagery layer for the locate map from the shared bear suitability model.

The two web imagery layers are stored at the root directory of My Contents on the active portal. They can be viewed from the Catalog pane in ArcGIS Pro or from the portal home app on the server. As with any web imagery layer, they can be added to a map in ArcGIS Pro. They can also be viewed in Map Viewer either by adding them to an existing map or opening them from the portal item.
