Introduction to ArcGIS IPS

Available for an ArcGIS organization licensed with the ArcGIS IPS extension.

ArcGIS IPS is an Indoor Positioning System that allows you to track your position in indoor environments. ArcGIS IPS uses a blue dot indicator on indoor maps to represent a user’s real-time location within a facility. ArcGIS IPS enables indoor location awareness and indoor location sharing for various indoor GIS use cases, such as indoor asset inspection, safety and security, and indoor navigation.

ArcGIS IPS leverages multiple data sources, including radio signals in indoor environments, sensor data from a smartphone’s inertial measurement unit (IMU), and precise floorplan information from the ArcGIS Indoors Information Model. For ArcGIS IPS to function effectively, a radio signal infrastructure must be in place, which can consist of a network of Bluetooth beacons or Wi-Fi access points.

Note:

Mixed infrastructures are supported if the same type of infrastructure is used throughout each building.

Applications supporting ArcGIS IPS

The following Esri products support ArcGIS IPS:

Note:

Current versions of Indoors Mobile (1.x) and Field Maps are compatible only with classic ArcGIS IPS maps. Support for IPS-aware maps will be available with upcoming releases.
