You can overwrite a stand-alone table that has been shared to your ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise portal. You may need to do this to reflect changes to the data, to incorporate new data, or to update the table schema. You can also edit a table directly in your portal if you are the item owner or if the table allows editing. For more information, see Edit tables in the ArcGIS Online help.
You can overwrite an existing hosted table or map image layer if all of the following conditions are true:
- You are signed in to your ArcGIS organization with the account that owns the hosted table or map image layer being overwritten or as an administrator.
- The location of the hosted table or map image layer you are overwriting has not changed while the Overwrite Table pane is open.
- The map image layer is not a hosted map image layer (in other words, it was not published from a web feature layer).
Overwrite a table
Follow these steps to overwrite a hosted table or map image layer:
- Open the ArcGIS Pro project that contains the stand-alone table you will use to overwrite the hosted table or map image layer. (Alternatively, add the stand-alone table to a map or scene.)
- In the Contents pane, select one or more tables. Right-click any selected table, point to Sharing, and click Overwrite Table .
- On the Overwrite Table dialog box, browse to the location of the hosted table or map image layer in your portal and select it. Click OK.
By default, the dialog box is filtered to show hosted tables. To show map image layers, choose Map Image Layer in the filter drop-down list.
- Read the Overwrite Table message and click OK to continue.
Caution:
If online edits were made to the hosted table or if data was appended to the hosted table, these changes will be overwritten.
Map image layers may have additional layers and capabilities that enhance functionality but are not supported by stand-alone tables. Layers and capabilities such as WFS, KML, and Validation will be disabled when you overwrite an existing map image layer through the Overwrite Table pane.
The Overwrite Table pane appears. On the General tab, under Service Details, the name of the hosted table or map image layer is displayed. This name can't be changed.
- Under the table name, choose one of the following options:
Use the item description from the hosted table or Use the item description from the web layer
(The option name depends on the type of item you are overwriting.)
The item description of the existing hosted table or web layer is preserved. This is the default option.
Use the item description from the standalone table The item description of the existing hosted table or web layer is overwritten with the stand-alone table's metadata.
- Optionally, modify the information in the Summary and Tags fields.
The fields may be empty if you chose to use the item description from the table in the previous step. A summary and tags are required when sharing to an ArcGIS Enterprise 10.9 or earlier portal.
You can enter a maximum of 128 tags.
- If you are overwriting an existing map image layer, optionally, under Type, check the Feature check box to include an associated web feature layer.
- Optionally, under Sharing Level, change the setting to one of the following:
- Owner—Only the owner (and organization members with privileges to view content owned by other members) can access the item. This is the default option.
- Organization—Share your content with all authenticated users in your organization. This option is available when you are signed in with an organizational account.
- Everyone (public)—Share your content with the public. Anyone can access and see it.
- Optionally, under Groups, select groups to which you belong to share your content with their members.
Note:
If you are the owner of the existing hosted table or map image layer, you can modify the group sharing settings. - Optionally, click the Configuration tab and change settings.

- Optionally, click the Content tab to view the folder, new hosted table or web layers, and tables with assigned IDs if available.
If you enabled the Allow assignment of unique numeric IDs for sharing web layers option on the Map Properties dialog box, assigned IDs appear for each table. To change an ID, click the number next to the table. On the Standalone Table Properties dialog box, on the General tab, type a custom integer ID in the Table ID text box. For more information, see Assign layer IDs.
- Under Finish Sharing, click Analyze to review for potential problems.
Errors and warnings are listed on the Messages tab. Right-click a message to open its help topic or take corrective action in the software. Errors must be resolved before you can share your GIS resource. Resolving warnings is recommended but not required.
- After you have resolved errors and optionally resolved warnings, click Publish to share the table.
To save a service definition for the web layer instead, click the Publish drop-down arrow and click Save As SD.
Caution:
Publishing a service definition staged to overwrite will automatically replace the existing web layer if found on the server. To avoid unintentionally overwriting existing web layers and their associated data, store these service definitions in a way that makes them distinguishable from other service definitions.
- Optionally, click Jobs to monitor the job status.
- When the table is published, click the Manage the hosted table or Manage the web layer link at the bottom of the pane.
- If necessary, sign in to your portal to open the item page for the hosted table or web layer. Open the table in Map Viewer or click the Data tab on the item page to confirm that the table has been overwritten.
