Modify terminal connections

Use the Modify Terminal Connections pane to connect a line to a terminal on a device point feature, change the terminal the line is connected to, and disconnect a line from a device terminal.

If a rule does not exist to support the connectivity between the line and device features, a warning is returned when selecting the feature to add to the Modify Terminal Connections pane.

To learn how to connect two points with terminals, see Create connectivity.

Requirements

The following are required for modifying terminal connections:

  • The utility network must be from the following data sources to enable the Terminal Connections command:
    • A utility network service.
    • A database connection where the dataset is unregistered as versioned.
  • The linear feature is from the Line class and the point feature is from the Device class.
  • The point feature is geometrically coincident with one of the endpoints of the line.
  • A junction-edge rule with the appropriate terminal specification exists.

Create connectivity between a line and device terminal

To model a midspan tap, an intermediate junction on a vertex of the line is required (for example, a tap). Junction-edge connectivity is established between the midspan point (for example, tap) and the line. A junction-junction connectivity association is then established between the two point features (specifying a terminal). Traces can then travel through the line, through the tap point to the connected terminal.

Use the following steps to set which terminal on a device feature a line feature is connected:

  1. Ensure that the utility network is added to an active map and select the utility network or one of its related layers in the Contents pane.

This enables the Utility Network tab.

  2. Under Utility Network, click the Data tab.
  3. In the Network Topology group, click Terminal Connections.

This opens or enables the Modify Terminal Connections pane.

  4. In the Modify Terminal Connections pane, ensure the Select a line feature tool is active.
  5. In a map, click a feature from the Line class to add it to the pane.
  6. In the pane, ensure the Select a device feature tool is active.
  7. In a map, click a feature with terminals from the Device class.

The point feature is added to the pane with an asterisk indicating it is new and has not been applied yet.

  8. In the pane, from the Terminal drop-down menu, choose a terminal.

Only terminals with rules appear in this list. If a terminal does not appear, there is no rule to allow the type of line selected to connect to that terminal.

  9. Click Apply.
  10. The specified line and terminal are connected. The To device terminal or From device terminal attribute on the line has been populated with the terminal ID of the point feature it is connected to. Validate the network topology to reflect the change. Update the subnetwork if the feature is now connected to one. Once the network topology is valid and the subnetwork is up to date, appropriate traces can travel through these features.

Modify or remove connectivity between a line and a device terminal

If a line feature has existing terminal connections defined, the Modify Terminal Connections pane can be used to make changes or remove the terminal connections.

Use the following steps to modify or remove terminal connections between a line and device feature:

  1. Ensure that the utility network is added to an active map, and select the utility network or one of its related layers in the Contents pane.

Device features already connected to the line are added to the pane.

  6. In the pane, make necessary edits to reflect the terminal connectivity between the Line and Device features.
    1. Make changes to the Terminal drop-down list.
    2. Click the Delete beside the device with the terminal to the terminal connection.

The point feature receives a strikethrough, indicating that it has been marked for deletion.

  7. Click Apply.
  8. The specified line and device feature are updated based on the terminal connectivity changes made. The To device terminal or From device terminal attribute on the Line class are updated to reflect edits made. Validate the network topology to reflect the change. Update the subnetwork if the feature was disconnected from one.
