Merge features into one feature

In the Modify Features pane, Merge Merge combines individual features on the same layer into a single feature. You can merge multipoint, line, polygon, or multipatch features residing on the same layer with the same geometry type.

You can choose to merge existing features or create a new feature on the same or different layer. Features that do not share one or more coincident vertices are combined as a multipart feature.

Merge existing features

When you merge existing features, you can choose the feature containing the attributes you want to preserve. Attribute values are not constrained by the domain merge policy defined by the source geodatabase.

  1. On the Edit tab, in the Features group, click Modify Modify Features.

    The Modify Features pane appears.

  2. Expand Construct and click Merge Merge.

The tool opens in the pane.

  3. Click the Existing Feature tab.
  4. Click Select Select and select features on the same layer.

The selected features to merge appear as a list in the pane.

  5. Click the Layer drop-down arrow and choose the layer containing the features you want to merge. If the entire selection is on the same layer, there is only one choice.
  6. In Features to Merge, choose the feature containing the attributes you want to preserve. To change the feature, click the feature.
  7. To remove a feature from the selection, click the Delete button Delete.
  8. In Merged Feature Attributes, edit the attribute values you want to apply to the merged feature.
  9. Click Merge.

Create a new feature

When you create a new feature by merging, you can choose the attributes and the layer on which to generate the feature by choosing a feature template. Merging overlapping polygons creates the geometric sum (union) of the selected features.

  1. On the Edit tab, in the Features group, click Modify Modify Features.

    The Modify Features pane appears.

  2. Expand Construct and click Merge Merge.

The tool opens in the pane.

  3. Click the New Feature tab.
  4. Click Select Select and select two or more polyline or polygon features on the same layer

The selected features to merge appear as a list in the pane.

  5. Click the Layer drop-down arrow and choose the layer containing the features you want to merge. If the entire selection is on the same layer, there is only one choice.
