Measure distance or area from an image

Distance or area can be measured from any georeferenced raster dataset, mosaic dataset, or image service. A DEM is required if you're making measurements in 3D.

Tip:

The units for these measurements can be changed in the Mensuration Results pane.

Measuring distance

The Distance tool Distance tool measures the distance between two or more points.

  1. Click the layer in the Contents pane.
  2. Click the Imagery tab.
  3. In the Mensuration group, click the drop-down arrow to display all the tools, and choose the Distance tool.
  4. Click two or more points along the feature you're measuring.
  5. Double-click the last point to stop measuring.

Measuring area

The Area tool Area tool calculates the area and perimeter of a feature.

  1. Click the layer in the Contents pane.
  2. Click the Imagery tab.
  3. In the Mensuration group, click the drop-down arrow to display all the tools, and choose the Area tool.
  4. Click three or more points along the feature you're measuring.
  5. Double-click the last point to stop measuring.
