LAS datasets display LAS points by referencing them directly from the LAS/ZLAS files on disk. This reference relies on a pointer that stores the LAS file paths. Moving the LAS/ZLAS files or altering the directory names of the folders in its path may potentially invalidate this link and make the LAS dataset incapable of finding the LAS/ZLAS files. Using the LAS dataset's Store relative path names to data source option can avoid this scenario from taking place.
Copy and move
When the Store relative path names to data source is selected from the LAS Dataset Properties dialog box, the LAS dataset (.lasd) and the LAS files can be relocated together as long as the relative directory paths are maintained between the files.
If the Store relative path names to data source option is not selected, and the LAS files are relocated, the LAS dataset will be broken and the LAS files will not be visible in ArcGIS Pro.
You can enable the option to store relative paths when creating the LAS dataset using two methods: the Create LAS Dataset geoprocessing tool or the LAS Dataset Properties dialog box.
To access LAS Dataset Properties of a LAS dataset in ArcGIS Pro, right-click the LAS dataset in the Catalog pane and click Properties.
If you copy LAS files, make sure to copy the LAS auxiliary files (.lasx); otherwise, you will lose the already calculated spatial index and statistical information.
When a LAS dataset is copied to another location using ArcGIS Pro, it maintains its reference to the LAS files participating in the LAS dataset. Therefore, if the LAS dataset uses the relative path name option, the links to the LAS files will be broken and they will not display with the LAS dataset. They will appear as missing LAS files.
Rename
You can rename a LAS dataset using ArcGIS Pro. You can rename the LAS dataset and LAS files stored on disk; however, any renamed LAS files referenced by a LAS dataset will not be displayed in ArcGIS Pro. They will appear as missing LAS files.
Delete
If a LAS file is deleted using the file system, the LAS dataset will not display the file that was deleted. The LAS files or surface constraints referenced by the LAS dataset can be removed from the LAS dataset using ArcGIS Pro. There are two methods for adding or removing LAS files or surface constraints from a LAS dataset: use either geoprocessing tools or the LAS Dataset Properties dialog box in Catalog pane. For more information on editing LAS datasets in ArcGIS Pro, see Edit LAS files in ArcGIS Pro.
Missing LAS files
If any LAS files that are referenced by the LAS dataset are moved, renamed, or deleted the path stored in the LAS dataset will be broken and they will only show extent boxes with special symbology for the missing files. In 2D, missing files display using a gray hatch symbol. In 3D, they display using a gray box. The graphics below show examples, in 2D and 3D, of a LAS dataset that references four LAS files with one that is missing.
