Create parking stall line features

You can use the Offset and Copy Parallel tools to create perpendicular parking stall line features.

Create the first line feature

The following video demonstrates how to use the Offset tool to create the first line feature from which all other lines are copied. The line is drawn perpendicular to an existing line that represents the wheelstop or curb of the parking stalls.

To create the first perpendicular line feature from which all other lines are copied, complete the following steps:

1. Add your data and configure settings for editing.

   Confirm that the feature layer you are editing is editable, the coordinate system assigned to the active map is suitable for the type of edits you're performing, and snapping is configured to help you work efficiently and accurately.

2. On the ribbon, click the Edit tab and click Modify in the Features group.

   Tip:

   To open the Modify Features pane and run the tool in a single step, click the Tools gallery drop-down arrow on the ribbon Edit tab and click Offset in the Reshape section.

   Running this tool from the Tools gallery uses the tool method and settings last used since the application was opened. If the tool is run for the first time, the default tool method is used. Tool settings such as allowing the tool to run without a selection are saved with the project.

   The Modify Features pane appears.

3. Click Offset .

   To find the tool, expand Construct, or type Offset in the Search text box.

4. Click the By Feature tab on the tool pane.

   The Select tool automatically runs.

5. Select the existing line that represents the wheelstop or curb of the parking stalls.

   To refine the selection in the pane's selection tree, right-click a feature and click Unselect or Only Select This .

6. Click the Distance field in the first row and type 7.5 ft to set the distance from the beginning of the selected line to the start of the first parking stall line feature.

   This represents the width of the parking stall.

7. In the tool pane, click the Offset field in the first row and type 18 ft for the length of the parking stall and press Enter.

   The new row automatically populates with the previous values.

8. Confirm the Distance field in the second row contains the value of 7.5 ft.
9. Click the Offset field in the second row and type 0 (zero).
10. Click the Side drop-down arrow and choose None.
11. Click Create.

Copy the remaining line features

The following video demonstrates how to use the Copy Parallel tool to create the remaining parking stall line features.

1. On the ribbon, click the Edit tab and click Modify in the Features group.

   Tip:

   To open the Modify Features pane and run the tool in a single step, click the Tools gallery drop-down arrow on the ribbon Edit tab and click Copy Parallel in the Reshape section.

2. Click Copy Parallel .

   To find the tool, expand Construct, or type Copy in the Search text box.

   The Select tool automatically runs.

3. Select the line representing the first parking stall line feature.
4. In the Values section of the tool pane, click the Distance field and type 7.5 for the width of the parking stalls.

   Note:

   This is the same offset distance used to create the first line that is being copied.

5. Click the Repetitions text box and type 9.
6. In the Method section of the tool pane, choose Right side only.
7. Click Copy.
