Get portal project updates

The first time you open a portal project, the project contents are downloaded from the portal to your computer. Thereafter, the project is opened from the local copy stored in the download location. No portal content is downloaded in this operation.

Typically, you save the project to upload your changes to the portal and download portal changes made by others. Another way to download portal content is to get portal project updates. When you get updates, your local copy of the project is completely overwritten by the portal project. Essentially, this is the same operation as opening the portal project for the first time.

You may want to get updates in the following situations:

  • If you don't have permission to save changes to the project, you can get updates to ensure that your local copy of the project is up to date.
  • If your local copy of the project becomes unstable for some reason, you can get updates to replace the local copy with the portal project.
  • If you have not worked with the project recently, you can get updates to ensure that your local copy of the project is up to date before you begin to make changes.
  • if you added a number of items to your local copy that you don't need and don't want to upload to the portal, you can get updates to replace your local copy of the project with the portal project.

You can get updates at any time during your working session. It is recommended that you get them when you open the project. This avoids the risk of overwriting unsaved work in your local copy of the project.

Caution:

Getting updates overwrites your local copy of the project. This means that any unsaved changes in your open project are lost. Ensure that your project is in a saved state before getting updates—unless you want to remove unsaved content from the project.

In addition, when you get updates, you lose the opportunity to resolve conflicts. For example, if you save a change to the portal and another user subsequently pushes a conflicting change, you will receive the other user's change when you get updates. You will not be notified that there was a conflict.
