Resolve failures to save a portal project

When you save a portal project, it's possible that items in your local copy of the project are not successfully uploaded to the portal, or that items on the portal are not successfully downloaded to your local copy. These failures can be caused by a sudden loss of connectivity to the portal, a power outage, or another unspecified problem.

The following can occur:

  • Changes are uploaded to the portal but not successfully downloaded from the portal. This is resolved by getting updates.
  • Changes are uploaded to the portal and downloaded from the portal, but the downloaded changes are not successfully merged with the local copy of the project. This is resolved by deleting the local copy of the project and reopening the project. ArcGIS Pro manages this process automatically.
  • Changes are not successfully uploaded to the portal. In this case, the portal project may be in an unstable state. This is resolved by overwriting the portal project with a local copy of the project.
  • ArcGIS Pro shuts down unexpectedly while you are saving the project or resolving conflicts. This is resolved by overwriting the portal project with a local copy of the project.

These failures can occur when there are no conflicts to resolve or after you have resolved conflicts.

Resolve an unsuccessful download of portal updates

After your changes to the local copy of the project are saved to the portal, portal updates by your collaborators may not download successfully. In this case, a message indicates that changes were saved to the portal, but that updates were not retrieved:

Message that updates were not retrieved from the portal

To resolve the problem, complete the following steps:

  1. Click OK on the Save Portal Project message.
  2. On the ArcGIS Pro title bar, click the project name drop-down arrow and click Get Updates.

The Get Portal Project Updates warning message appears.

Message that the local copy of the project will be overwritten.

  3. Click Yes on the warning message.

The Get Updates operation is performed. Your local copy of the project is identical to the portal project, and you can continue to work.

Resolve an unsuccessful merge of portal updates

After your changes to the local copy of the project are saved to the portal, portal updates by your collaborators may be downloaded but not merged with your local copy of the project. In this case, the following message appears:

Message that the project will be closed and reopened to resolve a merge problem.

A problem with merging updates means that the local copy of the project is in an unstable state. It must be deleted from its location on your computer and downloaded from the portal again.

To resolve the problem, click OK on the Save Portal Project message.

ArcGIS Pro closes the project, deletes the local copy from your computer, and re-creates the project in the same folder. Your local copy of the project is identical to the portal project, and you can continue to work.

Resolve an unsuccessful upload to the portal

After your local copy of the project is saved, your changes may not upload successfully to the portal. If this occurs, the Interrupted Save dialog box appears. You can either retry the save or overwrite the portal project with one of your saved local copies.

Retry save

The default option is to retry the save. If the upload failure occurred before your changes were merged into the portal project, and if the cause of the problem—for example, a power failure—is resolved, this operation typically succeeds.

To retry the save, complete the following steps:

  1. Confirm that the Retry save option is selected on the Interrupted Save dialog box.
  2. Click Save.

If the save is successful, you can continue working. If the save fails again, the Interrupted Save dialog box reappears. In this case, the portal project is in an unstable state and must be overwritten.

Overwrite the portal project with a saved local copy

You can overwrite the portal project with any of the three most recently saved states of your local copy of the project. These saved states are stored as independent project files (<project name>.aprx) in your user profile at C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\ESRI\ArcGISPro\PublishedProjects. They are saved in a folder with the same name as the folder that contains the current local copy in the download location. Each of your collaborators also has their three most recent saved states of the project.

The number of automatically saved copies of the project, and their location, can be set by your organization administrator in the application settings for portal projects.

To overwrite the portal project with one of your saved local copies, complete the following steps:

  1. On the Interrupted Save dialog box, click the Choose one of your saved local copies option.

The lower part of the dialog box shows the save history of the project. Your three most recent saved states of the project are available. Earlier saves are visible but are not available.

  2. Click one of the available saved local copies to select it.

  3. Click Open.

You are prompted to confirm your decision.

  4. Click Yes on the Overwrite Portal Project message.

The portal project is overwritten with the saved local copy of the project that corresponds to the selected option. This copy also replaces your currently open local copy of the project. Unsaved changes in the open project are lost. The portal project and your local copy of the project are now in an identical state and you can continue to work.

    Note:

If you click Cancel on the Interrupted Save dialog box, a message that the project was not saved appears. Similarly, if you click No on the Overwrite Portal Project prompt, no action is taken. Your copy of the local project remains open, and the portal project remains in a potentially compromised state.

Contact a collaborator to overwrite the project

One of your collaborators may have a saved copy of the project that is more recent than yours. In this case, a yellow banner warning appears at the bottom of the Interrupted Save dialog box.

The dialog box displays a warning that the current user did not make the most recent save. Machine names were removed from the image.

In the image above, the saves available to User 1 (Save IDs 118, 117, and 114) are not as recent as the last save made by User 2 (Save ID 119). User 1 does not have access to User 2’s saved copies. Before overwriting the project, User 1 should contact User 2 and discuss how to proceed.

To cancel the Interrupted Save dialog box when you need to contact a collaborator, complete the following steps:

  1. On the Interrupted Save dialog box, click Cancel.

A message informs you that your local copy of the project is not saved.

Message that the project was not saved

  2. Click OK on the Save Project message.

Your local copy of the project remains unsaved.

If the decision is made to overwrite the portal project with a collaborator’s saved copy, the collaborator will overwrite the project from the Info page of the ArcGIS Pro settings.

Resolve an application shutdown that locks the project

If ArcGIS Pro shuts down while you are saving a project or resolving conflicts, the project remains locked. Users can save changes locally, but no one can save changes to the portal. The project must be overwritten with a saved local copy using the Overwrite command on the Info page.

In this situation, the project must be overwritten by the user who experienced the application shutdown, by the project owner, or by an organization administrator.
