Keyboard shortcuts in the Contents pane

You can use keyboard shortcuts to perform certain actions in the map or layout Contents pane. The following table lists the available shortcuts and what they do in the Contents pane.

Esc

Return keyboard focus to the map from the Contents pane.

Minus sign (-) or Left arrow key

Contract selected items.

Plus sign (+) or Right arrow key

Expand selected items.

Ctrl+click an expansion control; Ctrl+Plus sign (+) or Minus sign (-); or Ctrl+Left arrow or Right arrow key

Expand or contract all items at that hierarchical level.

Ctrl+Shift+click an expansion control;, Ctrl+Shift+Plus sign (+) or Ctrl+Shift+Minus sign (-); or Ctrl+Shift+Left arrow or Ctrl+Shift+Right arrow key

Expand or contract all items at all hierarchical levels.

Spacebar

Turn on or off selected layers

Ctrl+Spacebar

Turn on or off all layers when a single layer is selected in the Contents pane.

If the selected layer is part of a group layer or a composite layer, all the members of that layer will be turned on or off. If multiple layers are selected, Ctrl+Spacebar works the same as Spacebar and turns only the selected layers on or off.

Ctrl+click a check box

Turn on or off all layers at that hierarchical level.

Ctrl+Shift+click a check box

Turn on or off all layers at all hierarchical levels.

Alt+click a check box

Turn off all layers except the one whose check box you clicked.

F2

Rename the selected item.

F12 or Enter

Open the Properties dialog box for a selected item.

Ctrl+click; Shift+click; Ctrl+Up arrow or Ctrl+Down arrow; Shift+Up arrow or Ctrl+Down arrow.

Select multiple layers in the Contents pane.

Ctrl+L

When a layout is the active view, lock or unlock the item selected in the Contents pane.

Ctrl+Shift+L

When a layout is the active view, lock or unlock all items at that hierarchical level in the Contents pane.

Alt+click a layer's name

Zoom to the extent of that layer.

Delete

Delete the item selected in the Contents pane.

Ctrl+T

Open the table of the layer or table selected in the Contents pane.
