Edit a topology edge

In the Modify Features pane, Vertices Edit Vertices can modify topology edges when you enable map topology on the Edit tab. Editing segment geometry, arc radii, or reshaping a Bezier curve also modifies the coincident segments shared by polyline or polygon features.

Editing a topology edge enables you to make simple changes to coincident boundaries that need to remain topologically connected when you finish your edits. When multiple features are selected, you can refine the selection and choose the features to be modified.

For steps to move a topology edge, see Move a topology edge.

Change a topology segment

You can change a topology segment to a line, a circular arc, or a Bezier curve.

  1. On the Edit tab, in the Manage Edits group, click the Map Topology Map Topology drop-down arrow and enable map topology.
  2. On the Edit tab in the Features group, click Modify Modify Features.

    The Modify Features appears.

  3. In the pane, expand Reshape and click Vertices Edit Vertices.

The tool opens in the pane.

    Edit Vertices Edges
  4. Click the Edges tab.

The topology graph highlights in the map.

  5. Click Select Select Topology and click the segment you want to change.

The selection appears in a list in the pane and highlights in the map. The editing toolbar appears with vertex tools.

  7. Click Change Segment, and click one of the following:
    • To Line—Changes an arc or Bézier curve to a line segment.
    • To Circular Arc—Changes a line segment or a Bézier curve to an arc.
    • To Bezier Curve—Changes a line segment or an arc to a Bézier curve.
  8. On the editing toolbar, click Finish Finish or press the F2 key to apply your changes.
    Note:

If your edits break the topology graph, the message Edit operation failed Error appears, and your changes are canceled.

Edit the radius of an arc

To edit the radius of a topology arc segment, click and drag the arc, or press the R key and type a radius.

  4. Click the Edges tab.

The topology graph highlights in the map.

  5. Click Select Select Topology and click the segment you want to change.

The selection appears in a list in the pane and highlights in the map. The editing toolbar appears with vertex tools.

  6. Hover over the segment. When the pointer changes to the segment pointer, edit the radius using one of the following methods:
    • Drag the arc segment.
    • Press the R key, type the radius, and press Enter.
  7. On the editing toolbar, click Finish Finish or press the F2 key to apply your changes.
    Note:

If your edits break the topology graph, the message Edit operation failed Error appears, and your changes are canceled.

Edit a Bézier curve

To reshape a topology Bezier curve, drag a curved segment, or drag a control point.

  6. Edit the Bezier curve using one of the following methods:
    • Hover over a curved segment. When the pointer changes to the segment pointer, drag the curve.
    • Hove over a control point. When the pointer changes to the vertex pointer, drag the control point.
    Note:

Press and hold the Ctrl key to drag a control point that is coincident with a feature vertex.

  7. On the editing toolbar, click Finish Finish or press the F2 key to apply your changes.
