Move a topological edge or feature

When map topology is turned on, the Move tool Move attempts to preserve topologically connected edges and nodes or features. You can move the selection anchor and use it to snap to other features based your current snap settings.

Move a topological edge

Moving a topological edge preserves the direction and distance of the selected edge and stretches the connected edges.

  1. On the Edit tab, turn on topology, choose your snapping preferences, and show the Modify Features pane.
    1. In the Manage Edits group, click the topology arrow and choose Map Topology Map Topology.
    2. In the Snapping group, click the Snapping drop-down menu List By Snapping and enable your snapping preferences.
    3. In the Features group, click Modify Modify Features.
  2. In the pane, expand Alignment, and click Move Move.
  3. Click the Edges tab.
    Move Edges
  4. Click Select Select Topology and click the edge you want to move.
    • To zoom to the selected edge, click Zoom To Edge Zoom To.

The topology graph appears as a highlighted layer of edges and nodes coincident with the corresponding feature geometry.

  5. If you are using the selection anchor to snap to other features, drag it to the new location.
    • Press Ctrl, hover over the anchor until the vertex pointer appears, and drag the anchor.
  6. To preserve the general shape of the connected edges, turn on Stretch Topology Stretch Topology on the editing toolbar. This editing mode moves any vertices that lie between the selected edge and the nearest node connections.

  7. Hover near the edge until the segment pointer appears, and drag the selected edge to the new location.

Coincident edges also move, and any edges connected to its endpoints stretch and remain connected.

  8. To apply your changes, click Finish Finish or press F2.

If your edits break the topology graph, the message Edit operation failed Error appears, and your changes are canceled.

Move a topological feature

Moving a topological feature preserves the shape of the selected feature and stretches connected edges.

  1. On the Edit tab, turn on topology, choose your snapping preferences, and show the Modify Features pane.
    1. In the Manage Edits group, click the topology drop-down arrow and choose Map Topology Map Topology.
    2. In the Snapping group, click the Snapping drop-down menu List By Snapping and enable your snapping preferences.
    3. In the Features group, click Modify Modify Features.
  2. In the pane, expand Alignment, and click Move Move.
  3. Click the Features tab.
    Move Features
  4. Click Select Select Topology and click the feature you want to move.

The topology graph appears as a highlighted layer of edges and nodes coincident with the corresponding feature geometry.

  5. If you are using the selection anchor to snap to other features, move it to the part of the selected feature you want to snap.
    • Press Ctrl, hover over the anchor until the vertex pointer appears, and drag the anchor.
  6. To preserve the general shape of the connected features, turn on Stretch Topology Stretch Topology on the editing toolbar. This editing mode moves any vertices that lie between the selected edge and the nearest node connections.

  7. Hover near the selection until the move pointer appears, and drag the feature to the new location.

Coincident edges also move, and any edges connected to its endpoints stretch and remain connected.

    Note:

When map topology is turned on, rubber band lines preview the topological connectedness of your edits as you move the feature. When the rubber band lines disappear, the connected features are no longer topologically connected and are not edited.

  8. To apply your changes, click Finish Finish or press F2.
