Get started with ArcGIS IPS

Available for an ArcGIS organization licensed with the IPS extension.

ArcGIS IPS is an indoor positioning system (IPS) extension that provides accurate geolocation for a wide variety of indoor location use cases. IPS allows you to locate yourself indoors by displaying a blue dot on an indoor map. You can navigate to people, places, and assets inside of a facility in real time. With the integration of the IPS into the Esri platform, ArcGIS users can improve their operational efficiency by making better informed decisions.

To enable indoor positioning, you need to survey your facilities to collect data about your indoor spaces. ArcGIS IPS Setup is a mobile app for Android and iOS that allows you to plan and perform survey recordings inside facilities and sites to collect location data. Recordings can be uploaded from the IPS Setup app to an ArcGIS organization and used to create a positioning file. Once you have created the indoor positioning file, return to the IPS Setup app to test the indoor positioning system.

Required software

One of the following is required:

• The latest version of ArcGIS Enterprise for a portal connection
• An ArcGIS Online organization

Set up ArcGIS IPS

To use the Indoor Positioning tools, you need to configure an ArcGIS organization on Enterprise or ArcGIS Online that is licensed for ArcGIS IPS.

Note:

If using Enterprise, ArcGIS Enterprise 10.9.1 or later is required.

Complete the following steps to access Indoor Positioning tools in ArcGIS Pro:

1. License ArcGIS IPS in Enterprise or ArcGIS Online.
2. Connect to your ArcGIS organization in ArcGIS Pro.

Create the ArcGIS IPS Information Model

Use the Enable Indoor Positioning tool to create an ArcGIS IPS Information Model in an existing geodatabase. The IPS model contains the fields and tables required for surveying facilities and generating a positioning file for use in IPS-enabled apps.

Create floor plan data

To accurately locate yourself during the survey process, you must use floor plan data that conforms to the ArcGIS Indoors Information Model or create the required feature classes and floor plan data.

Create transitions

Transitions in IPS differ from transitions in Indoors and are used to define facility entrances and exits. To enable transitions, you'll need to use an Indoors model or create a feature class to add transitions to your floor plan data. Below are the primary steps for creating transitions:

1. Configure a Transitions feature class created with Indoors or create a feature class for transitions.
2. Add transitions to the floor plan data.

Create pathways

Pathways represent a predefined routing network and are used by IPS to snap the user's location indicator to Pathways line features that are IPS-enabled for improved positioning accuracy. To enable pathways, use Pathways features that conform to the Indoors model or create a feature class for pathways and add pathways to the floor plan data. Below are the primary steps for creating pathways:

1. Configure a Pathways feature class created with Indoors or create a feature class for pathways.
2. Add pathways to the floor plan data.
