As you add, remove, or delete entity and relationship types and their properties, and update visualization layouts, you can save your data model designs to the investigation. You can save multiple designs in one investigation. Additionally, you can view differences between a data model design and the current data model. Saved data model designs are available in the Catalog pane within the investigation. Data model designs can be edited, saved, and applied to the data model. You can export data model design files and import existing data model designs.
Save a data model design
You can save a data model design to your investigation as you update entity and relationship types, their properties, or the visualization layout for the design. You can create many data model designs in your investigation and access them at a later time.
- Finalize your changes to the data model design.
- On the toolbar at the top of the data model designer, click the Save drop-down arrow and click Save As.
The Save Data Model Design dialog box appears.
- Click the Investigation drop-down list and click the investigation where you want to save the design.
- Click in the Design text box and type a name for the new design. Optionally, select an existing design from the drop-down list.
- Click Save.
The data model design is saved in the investigation.
- To delete the current data model design, click the Design drop-down list on the data model designer toolbar and click Delete
.The data model design is deleted from the investigation.
- To create a new design, click New Design
on the data model designer toolbar.The current data model of the knowledge graph appears in the view panel.
Import and export data model design files
Data model designs can be imported to an investigation from a file. After creating or modifying a design, you can export it to a data model design file. You can also drag a design file in your project onto another investigation in the same project or in a different project that is open in a second instance of ArcGIS Pro.
Import a data model design
You can import an existing data model design file to your investigation.
- Browse to the investigations in your project in the Catalog pane or the catalog view.
- Double-click an investigation
to see its contents. - Double-click the Data Model Designs folder
and click Import
. - On the browse dialog box that appears, browse to the location where the design file is stored, select the file, and click OK.
The data model design file is added to the project.
- Double-click the Data Model Designs folder

The data model design files stored in the project are listed
- Save the project.
Since the data model designs are stored with the investigation in the project, the design files that were imported are not saved in your project until the project has been saved.
Export a data model design
You can export an existing data model design file to your investigation.
- If needed, save a data model design.
- Browse to your investigation in the Catalog pane or the catalog view.
- Double-click an investigation
to see its contents. - Double-click the Data Model Designs folder
. - Right-click a data model design
and click Export
. - On the browse dialog box that appears, browse to the location where the design file will be stored.
- Type a name for the configuration file in the Name text box and click OK.
The data model design is saved to a file with the provided name and in the specified location.
Merge the data model with the design
You can compare a current data model of the knowledge graph with a data model design. You can merge a current data model with an existing data model design. You can choose how the differences are visualized in the data model designer. Types present in the design that do not exist in the data model can appear as a new item
added and types deleted in the design, but still present in the data model, can appear as deleted
.
- Ensure the data model designer is open.
- Make an update to your data model.
- Add or remove an entity type or a relationship type in the investigation view.
- Add an entity or relationship type through the load table process.
- Click the view tab of the data model designer to make it active.
The Data Model Update dialog box appears.
- Click Yes.
The Merge Data Model with Design dialog box appears.
- Optionally, uncheck types present in the data model to mark them as deleted in the merged design view.
- Click OK.
The merged data model and design appear in the data model designer.
Tip:
You can open a data model design from the Catalog pane. In the Catalog pane, on the Project tab, browse to the Investigation, and select Data Model Designs. Right-click the design and click Open Data Model Design
