Offset a multipatch or 3D object face

The Offset face tool Offset adds a face inside an existing face at a specified offset distance to a selected multipatch or 3D object feature. The tool is available on the multipatch toolbar when a 3D multipatch or 3D object feature is edited with the Edit Vertices tool Edit Vertices.

When you add an offset face to a multipatch or 3D object feature, consider the following:

  • A face can extrude to create a volume or a void.
  • To type an offset distance, turn on on-screen constraints.
  • The multipatch toolbar also appears with the Create 3D Geometry tool that is available with editing templates for 3D source layers.

To add a face inside an existing face at a specified offset distance, complete the following steps:

  1. Open a scene containing the multipatch or 3D object feature you are editing.

    Alternatively, add the layer containing the feature to the active scene.

  2. Configure settings for editing.

    Specify which layers can be edited, confirm that the coordinate system assigned to the active map is suitable for the type of edits you're performing, and enable the snap agents that allow you to work effectively with the multipatch or 3D object features you are editing.

  3. On the Edit ribbon tab, click Modify Modify Features in the Features group.

    The Modify Features pane appears.

  4. Click the Edit Vertices tool Edit Vertices.

    To find the tool, expand Reshape, or type Vertices in the Search text box.

    The Edit Vertices tool appears in the pane.

  5. Click the Select a feature tool Active Select, and select the multipatch or 3D object feature.

    If features are currently selected, the selection tool displays Change the selection.

    To refine the selection in the selection view, right-click a feature and click Unselect Clear Selected or Only Select This List By Selection.

    The multipatch toolbar appears when only one feature is selected.

  6. Click the Offset Face tool Offset.

    Alternatively, right-click the face and click Offset Face.

  7. Click the face.

    A 3D handle appears on one of the edges of the selected face.

  8. Drag the 3D handle inward to draw the offset distance.

    Alternatively, if on-screen constraints is active, click and hold the 3D handle, press the Tab key to activate the parameter, and type the value.

    The offset face appears and a 3D handle appears at its center.

  9. Drag the handle outward to create a volume or drag it into the feature to create a void.

    Alternatively, right-click the handle, click Height, and type the length of the extrusion. A negative value creates a void.

    Note:

    Additional offset faces can be added in a stepwise workflow.

  10. Click Finish Finish on the toolbar, or press the F2 key.
