Legacy:

ArcGIS Topographic Mapping brings the Defense Mapping and Production Mapping extensions into a single, unified experience starting with ArcGIS Pro 3.6. See Defense Mapping or Production Mapping if you are using a prior version.

The ArcGIS Topographic Mapping extension optimizes and tailors geographic information system (GIS) production for an organization using ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Enterprise. It is a specification-driven topographic mapping software for national, civilian defense, and military mapping agencies and authoritative content producers.

This extension includes the Topographic Production toolbox, which contains tools to automate the production process from beginning to end through standardization, repeatability, and configuration. A product data file installer is available from My Esri with Topographic Mapping that installs files for data creation and feature extraction from imagery, and provide tools for data management, validation, and visualization.

With the extension, you can also publish a service for use with web GIS integration. Combined with the product files for ArcGIS Enterprise, the service is integrated into the following topographic production system web apps:

  • Map Production System—self-serve, configurable app that enables high-quality, advanced cartographic production
  • Topographic Production Manager—helps teams manage map production with features that improve coordination, reduce manual tracking, and gives teams a clear view of production status

Topographic Mapping provides the following capabilities:

  • Consistent workflows—Task-based workflows ensure consistency across operations. Each workflow is designed as a focused task, allowing a technician to better understand the type of work that is required.
  • Automated generalization—Out-of-the-box generalization models automate the creation of maps, charts, and data products at any scale based on the unique characteristics of different data themes. The models automate multiscale mapping efforts to produce any output scale of data or cartographic product from a single best-scale database.
  • Cartographic maintenance—Automated map production and cartographic processes create and manage the production of high-quality printed maps.
  • Data maintenance—Reduce the time to compile and maintain authoritative content. Perform database maintenance and quality control for data. Ensure consistency by capturing and distributing best practices throughout the organization.
  • Production management—Gain insight on the status of work in an organization. Managers can identify work that is at risk, reassign or reprioritize work, and create new work items.

Supported data models

The Topographic Mapping product files support the industry specifications and are available from My Esri as an ArcGIS Pro additional download.

Topographic Mapping supports the specifications described in the following table:

Specification nameDescription

Topographic Data Store (TDS)

Collect topographic features at different scales according to the TDS Entity Catalog (EC). The TDS EC is a subset of the National System for Geospatial Intelligence (NSG) EC and contains primarily topographic features.

Multinational Geospatial Co-production Program (MGCP)

Collect MGCP-compliant topographic data according to the latest MGCP Technical Reference Document (TRD).

MGCP Urban Vector Data (MUVD)

Collect MUVD-compliant topographic data according to the latest MUVD TRD.

Civilian Topographic Map (CTM)

Collect CTM-compliant topographic data that meets National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) standards.
